Trilucid have spent years building a sound that draws from progressive and melodic house without losing their feel for a club set. The London-based duo, Andy MacDougall and Hilton Caswell, have released on UV, Colorize and Anjunadeep Explorations alongside running their own Ionica Audio label. Their friendship goes back more than two decades, and that shared history comes through in the way they talk about records as much as the way they make them. Ahead of their set at MIOAZ’s first birthday party at 93 Feet East on 26 September, we go Back To Mine with Trilucid.
Hilton:
Pet Shop Boys – Always on My Mind
Pet Shop Boys were a massive part of the music I loved growing up and this has always been one of my favourites. It’s big, emotional, brilliantly produced and still sounds fantastic today.
Depeche Mode – Behind the Wheel
I absolutely loved Depeche Mode growing up and this was always one of my favourites. Dark, electronic and hypnotic, but still an incredible song. I can put this on now and it takes me straight back.
Bob Marley & The Wailers – Three Little Birds
Bob Marley has been in my life for as long as I can remember. This is such a positive record and it genuinely makes me feel better whenever I hear it. Perfect for when everyone has finally come back from the club and slowed down.
Aretha Franklin – Wonderful
What a voice. But it’s the groove on this that gets me as well. It’s warm, soulful and just makes you feel good. Aretha is one of those artists where you really don’t need to say too much. Just put the record on.
Mafikizolo – Love Potion
This takes me straight back to South Africa. I love the warmth of it, the melody and that unmistakably South African feel. Living in London now, music like this can transport me home in seconds.
Andy:
Motez – The Future (feat. Antony & Cleopatra) (Purple Disco Machine Remix)
Heard this one at a festival wedding over the summer and have not stopped listening since. It’s a beautiful track, and PDM honed in on the magic moment and made it into an 8 minute bittersweet anthem.
Jungle – Someday, Somewhere
Jungle are my usual go to band when I want some good vibes. Their production and mixing, particularly on the vocals is impeccable, and this track from their new album really stood out.
Dimitri From Stoke On Trent – I Wanna Be Your Lobster
I’ve been playing this at after parties for 15 years. If you ever need a mood lifter, this is the one. Hmm, definitely a disco theme so far!
Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra – Too Much Information (Laolu Remix)
One of my all time favourite tracks, it builds so brilliantly, the mood is perfect. I have listened thousands of times, and will listen thousands more and never stop loving it.
Chaos In The CBD – 78 To Stanley Bay
Another of my all-time favourites. Tough and gentle at the same time, the pinnacle of lo-fi house, and one that my wife and I love so much we played it at our wedding.
