Right from the very moment the beat explodes on City Rhythm to the closing Don’t Stop, Johnny D and Nicky P’s hot amalgamation defines the heart of House and the music it was sampling in the nineties. There is something particularly timely about how this sounds, and is certainly relevant to the resurgence of that timeframe today. A lot of which is undoubtedly down to its vibrant raw-edged approach, cutting up rough beats and classic Disco loops to pay homage to the past but then creating something new from it all. Most of the music they produced together appeared on Johnny’s Henry Street label which if you’re a fan of the era will form an essential part of your record collection. If not, then it’s probably time to get acquainted.
