Amon Tobin and Joe ‘Doubletrick’ Chapman – a weird start to your career, meeting in Brighton, UK, then scooping over to Montreal… how the heck did that all happen, why the move?
“We got working on ideas really early on in the UK but the great thing about Montreal is there’s nothing you can do in the Winter except make beats to keep warm.”
How did the team up with DJ Sway happen? He won a MOBO and recorded seven tracks with you in Canada…?
We loved Sway’s intelligent lyrics and delivery but wanted to do a record with him that reflected our idea of good music behind it. That’s our mission really, to take the vocalists we love out of their established contexts and bring them into our own.”
What was working with Missy protege dancehall legend Ce’Cile like?
“I was in awe of Ce’Cile. She’s a total pro and very easy to work with. It’s like ordering a pizza and then the delivery guy turns up with the best pizza ever and ice cream too.”
Who has made the best ever album – dead or alive?
“My vote goes to hendrix on ‘Electric Ladyland.’
Your press for your album states the following…”Imagine if Timberland were kidnapped and held hostage in a council flat in Tottenham. Imagine then, that elite robot agents aligned to the New World Order were sent into rescue him with laser cannons little knowing that the kidnappers were in fact an underground cell of benefit-cheat Jedi. Imagine hip hop recapturing the sheer brutality of classic-era Public Enemy without it becoming a retread. Imagine if “urban” music was made not for the charts but the heart. Imagine “Two Fingers” – what are your thoughts on this quote?
“Press releases are there to catch people’s attention and should be taken with a pinch of salt. Having said that we really are great!”
Talk us through the ”Two Fingers’ album…
“It’s bass driven music, but like, from the future. We traveled to the future to take a look around and came back with this. We also got a peek at our next record and it’s even better!”
