Splendid new album ‘Album’ getting into your ears on Kitsune/Co Op…
David and Russell, brilliant new album swinging our way, you are without doubt one of the most exciting new Electronic acts to hit Europe in ages – what music did the pair of you listen to growing up – who were your favourite bands?
David: Hi Dan. People that I personally was into included The Smiths, Public Enemy, Underworld, Primal Scream, The Chemical Brothers, Blur, Aphex Twin, The Prodigy, Wu Tang, The Libertines and Kraftwerk. Quite eclectic!”
Russell: For me, Joy Division, Primal Scream and strangely enough, Devo.”
Your hugely acclaimed mini player ‘Down & Out In Paris & London’ released last year – critically acclaimed by major press including NME with some wondrous singles – what were your favourite tracks on the album?
David: ‘Always More’ is probably my favourite track. It felt good to write such a positive track, something which I have never done before. Also, ‘Can’t Get Enough’. The lyrics are probably the most direct of what I see is going on right now in the world. The Orwellian nightmare that our politicians and their Freemason pals have sold our future to. As a former British Defence Secretary said, “World events do not occur by accident, they are made to happen, staged and managed by those who hold the purse strings”. The recent expenses ‘scandal’ is the tip of the iceberg of what these people are doing on their ‘Animal Farm’.”
Who do you think past and present are the best producers in the world?
David: “Jagz Kooner, Aphex Twin, Stephen Street, KRS ONE and RZA.”
Russell: “The only name I’d add is Nigel Goodrich…”
What’s the story behind the single from Down & Out…’French Girls Playing Guitar’?
David: “We were out one night watching some bands and I played Russ the beginnings of a track, just as the next band took to the stage. There was a foxy French girl on bass guitar…”
The new album ‘Animal’, another brilliant piece of work out on Parisian label Kitsune which houses the likes of Digitalism, Klaxons, Simian Mobile Disco and La Roux…any favourite tracks?
David: We are just so happy listening to the whole piece of work, everything is perfect.
The new single from the album ‘Always More’ with remixes by Yuksek and Shadow Dancer – why did you decide on these two for remix duties?
David: “We love what they have done in the past. We thought it would be interesting to have a brutal remix and a more melodic one and these two chaps filled the bill nicely.”
Chaps, nice English word! As a duo, how do you both complement each other?
David: “With gritted teeth.”
What one artist out there would you most want to work with?
David: “Russ”.
What is the most beautiful part of Paris that you have experienced when over there?
David: “Montmartre, probably the most romantic streets in the world.”
You have received support from the likes of Pete Tong, Anne Mac, Lamacq, Tiga, Erol Alkan and Brodinski – but what DJs and live acts in clubs and festivals have rocked your boats over the years?
David: ” DJs? I love Erol Alkan and Busy P, both have a don’t give a fuck attitude and play what excites them rather what’s new and what they ‘should be playing’. Live acts? Morrissey, Crystal Castles, Primal Scream, The Presets, Chems, The Prodigy and of course Underworld.”
What festival are you looking most looking forward to playing at this Summer?
David: “Glade Festival. It’s a Glastonbury offshoot and we’re playing with our friends Underworld.”
And finally, Daft Punk, Kraftwerk or Underworld?
David: “Underworld all the way, the words alone mean so much to me. Combine that with the music… genius x”
