Best Of 2009 – Part 1
What Was All That About? – Part 1

GRAEME PARK

The DJ that first made me dance. From The Hacienda in Manchester to New York to every super club in the world. Aberdeen’s finest who spins, what can only be described as pure, quality House music. Even if he did try and shave off one of my eyebrows once. A true gent.

The DJ
Todd Terry. I played with him in  Amerdam this year and thought he was amazing. No messing about, just pure and simple, proper old fashioned DJing.

The Club
Sankeys in Manchester. I’ve had two awesome gigs there this year. Fabulous atmosphere and wonderful crowd.

The Tune
‘Give It To Me’ – Rasmus Faber feat. Dyanna Fearon.  This tune really stands out from the plethora of dull, tedious music-by-numbers tunes that arrive in my inbox every day.

The Country
Thailand. Despite playing all over the globe for over 20 years, I’ve never visited Thailand until this year. It was unbelievably superb. I now now why people have been boring the tits off me by going on about it for years. An amazing country.

The Event
OWAP Amsterdam.  I do this every November and have such fun.  One of the highlights of my year.

DMC’S SALLY MCLINTOCK

Biggest tune -‘ Duck Sauce’ A-Trak / Armand Van Helden  and ‘Wind It Up’ Mark Pritchard

Best club – ‘Rave in a Cave’ in Austria was pretty crazy this year at Spring Festival

Most incredible news story – The tragedy of  Roc Raida. RIP xxxx

Album – The new Strong Arm Steady has been a firm fave of mine now for a while…

Biggest achievement -Creating my first ever DJ Set in honour or GM Roc Raida  and getting up on stage at the UK Fund raiser / tribute event and talking the club through my set and the tracks I chose, someone shouting out to me why don’t you DJ and my response ‘because I don’t have f*****g time’ and the whole club laughing. I was so nervous, it was a big thing for me to do, stepping onto the other side of stage!

Biggest dickhead – Can I say my uncle for turning up at the DMC World 25th Anniversary with a big black eye?

Sports Star – Gary Neville, still the hottest Mancunian in the Premiership

Best country visited and why – That’s silly,  you know my heart’s in New York City.

DJ – Mr Thing actually, amazing music selection and he still HAS those routines down… come back to DMC Mr Thing!

Hero – Michael Jackson for his music, the most incredible influential artist of my time

Festival – Well it certainly isn’t Glade Festival, which I will NEVER be attending again in my life due to torrential rain and sleeping in a tent. Spring Festival was amazing in Graz, Austria , had sooooooo much fun.

Best gig – oooh I loved the Stones Throw party at Miami WMC and the Bacardi party also at WMC (free mojitos helped!)

And finally…what are you most looking forward to in 2010? New Beginnings and 2010 is my year!

NIC FANCIULLI

The new breed of ‘superstar DJs’ going all the way. The Maidstone boy did good.

The Tune
We’re All Clean’ – Joris Voorn on Rejected

The Club
Again, it has to be Womb in Tokyo but El Paso Club 101 was the surprise gig of 2009

The Film
Think this came out 2008 but I only saw it this year. But it was a film from Jennifer Lynch (David Lynch’s daughter) called Surveillance

The News Story
Obvious but Michael Jackson passing away was pretty intense

The Festival

JON SA TRINXA

The coolest DJ in Ibiza with the coolest workplace in the world looks back…

The Country
Spain, Ibiza – because the locals smile , if only the rest of the world could do the same it would be a better place

The Tune
‘Don’t Turn It Off’ (feat Qzen) – 40 Thieves

2010
New music

The Club
‘We Love’ @ Space on Sundays in Ibiza

KRAFTY KUTS

The coolest DJ, producer and remixer in the world at the moment. We think so. He has a style like no other. A dude.

The Film
‘Up’ – Disney Pixar create a faultless masterpiece once again

The Album
‘Subfocus’ – Subfocus. A truly unique, fresh and exciting new album

The Country
The Philppines. An incredibly beautiful, vibrant third world country that brings out everything down to earth.

JON CARTER

A stalwart on the worldwide DJing and production scene. Opened our eyes to Big Beat, now is known around the world as one of the biggest spinners we have. Go on you little Monkey…

The Tune
‘Pon De Floor’ – Major Lazer. For all the hundreds of remixes out there, the original is by far the best. A perfect marriage of house, acid, beats and dancehall. And it almost brought ‘daggering’ to the dancefloors of the UK.

The Film
Moon. The beautiful bastard love child of David Bowie’s Space Oddity and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 A Space Odyssey. Manages to look incredible, have only one actor and plays with existential themes without getting pretentious or dull for one second. Awesome. And, it’s actually written and directed by David Bowie’s son! Also check out Gomorrah and Waltz with Bashir. All three demand to be seen.

The Festival
The Big Chill, playing overlooking the lake as the sun went down. I hadn’t been before, and I’ve never seen such a beautiful site, soaked in amazing sunshine with so many people all on the same great vibe. Bliss. Sheer bliss.

The Dickhead
Prince Philip. For saying to that poor young soldier almost completely blinded in action, “I’m not surprised you’re that blind, looking at your tie”. This kid fought for ‘queen and country’ and this cunt takes the piss out of him giving up his sight. Utter vile utter fucking cunt. You should be picked apart with tweezers, cell by cell. Eyes first. Burn in hell.”

Can you tell that pissed me off a bit?

The music I’ve been working on coming out and damaging dancefloors. Roosevelt High man! Oh, and Snowbombing!

MARK JONES

Mr Wall of Sound and the music industry’s best friend…without him, we’d be fucked

The Single
Without doubt, its Rage Against The Machine ‘Killing In The Name’. The most important statement made by people (the music buying public that is ) in a long long time. Onwards !

The Album
Royksopp ‘Junior’ – but I would say that wouldn’t I ! So great to have them back with us. Watch out for ‘Senior’ .

The Breakthrough

In my mind its David Guetta. Not that I’m a huge fan of his music, but the fact that his success in the USA with the Black Eyed Peas and otherwise has finally made people sit up and realise that Electronic / Dance Music can communicate on another level over there. It will have massive positive effect all round.

KYM MAZELLE

Young Hearts Run Free Baby. One of the best female diva vocalists we shall ever see.

The Gig
Best gig this year by far was the BBC Radio 2 Orchestra and Guy Barker Big Band Tribute concert Ella, Aretha, Dusty & Me featuring Kym Mazelle, Liane Carroll and Madeline Bell narrated by Michael Brandon at the Mermaid Theatre in London on Dec 17th – It will be aired on New Years Day on  Radio 2

The News Story
