DMC Kicks Back…
Funkerman

The whole of the Dutch dance scene is blowing up right now and it seems that the spotlight is on even more than before. Who are you tipping for the top that is still bubbling under at the moment?

I think we will go back to the more Techy sound again. There are a lot of different styles coming from the Dutch scene and abroad, people tend to see it as one thing. It’s the diversity that we all need so much. In Holland the underground Techy guys like 2000 and one, Joris Voorn, Pitto are having a big effect on what is going to happen on a large worldwide scale coming year.

If you could put together a Dutch ‘super team’ of DJs/Producers, like the Swedish House Mafia, who would be on your side and what would you call yourselves?

Fedde le Grand, Martijn ten Velden, Rene Amesz are the guys where I would like to work with. They know how to party!
Maybe they won’t agree, but I would call it something like the Produtchers.

What’s the deal with your interest in caps?

If I don’t wear a cap while I’m DJ-ing, you don’t wanna see the hairdo afterwards!!! Hahaha

You obviously do your fair share of jetting around the world and spending time in airport lounges. Do you enjoy the travelling and what’s your top tip for in-flight happiness?

I have never really enjoyed the travelling itself. Arriving and being in different cities is the fun part of travelling. To make everything more enjoyable I always carry around my laptop and a portable harddisk full of movies and stand up comedians.

Every man and his dog has switched on to Twitter. What is your take on the ever changing net culture and who is your favourite person to follow on Twitter?

I have just finished my first gadget. Now I can upload a mini Funkerman website on every social networking site. So everyone can find out a few things about me on the internet environment they feel comfortable with. Otherwise you just keep on switching from one website to the other one. I rather produce my ass off in the studio then spend my days on the internet.

Can you tell us something that would surprise the Kinky Malinki faithful? For instance, do you have any strange hobbies??

Hahaha no I’m sorry, no strange hobbies or other abnormalities!

What is the worst stereotype of a DJ that you conform too?? The Drink? The Women? The Hardcore Partying? All three??

For me, none of them I always try to be as professional as possible and try to show my best behaviour 😉

Are you able to describe musical and DJing fulfilment for yourself?

I will!!!!! And you will hear that April 10 J

You’ve played Kinky before… How did you find your first experience with  and how important is it for you to forge strong relationships with a party crowd such as KM’s?

My first experience was great, good crowd, they were all in the party mode. So that makes my job very easy. The relationship between the crowd and the DJ is the most important factor for me. It takes place on so many different levels on the night itself, but also on the internet and sometimes when another DJ plays one of my tracks people recognize that it’s one of mine and that’s cool. I don’t want to disappoint anyone so I do my best to please everybody!!!!

There hasn’t been a DJ that has graced the decks at matter and not been amazed in one way or the other. What did you think of matter?

Matter looks great and the sound is perfect as well…

Funkerman headlines Kinky along with MYNC and DBN on April 10th.
