Steve Mac’s Brighton-based label continues to show there’s more to the south coast resort than Norman Cook alone. Danish producer Rune, a man with almost as many monikers as Mr Cook: he’s previously recorded as Rude Rkade (Underwater), Heavy Rock (Southern Fried) and Artificial Funk (Skint). Now paired with vocalist Morten Luca, ‘Nothing New’ is a skippy almost pop-edged song, that benefits considerably from Solid Groove’s percussive reworking – their funk is chewier and more fun, employing tuneful and obscure samples to accompany just a splattering of the vocal. The label boss also mixes up a cheeky version of Rune’s 2003 Ibiza sax led favourite, ‘Calabria’, with the new vocal to created added VFM.
