Starting 2013 with bang! Next up ‘Insominia’ and an anthemic electro monster

Welcome back to DMCWORLD Rich – and what a frickin’ busy start to the year you have had! This week saw you release your new tune ‘Insomnia’ coming through Chris Lake’s Rising imprint. Talk us through the tune…

“Yeah it’s been kinda nuts eh? This track actually started life over a year ago so it has been a bit of a journey. It’s a really different sound that people are used to from me and a lot of that comes from the incredible vocal that Gita made for it and also from the advice and support that Chris gave me. To be honest it’s a relief that it’s finally out and people like it!”

Another Miami is around the corner, where can we find you this time at WMC?

“I am playing Wall on the 14th, Bamboo and Clevelander on the 22nd, Club 50 at the Viceroy on the 23rd and the National on the 24th!”

Once upon a time deals were done in Miami – but as one big label boss told me this week…”work Miami? Everyone just goes to party nowadays…” Do you agree with him?

“Actually I don’t to be honest, Miami has always been a very productive time of year for me, just because you get to meet people face to face. Getting to know someone in real life is so much better than online and I find you’re way more likely to strike a deal.”

Have you any unreleased bombs you will be unleashing at the conference?

“I’ve got a few tracks I’m almost done with that should be ready in time – a collab with Syn Cole, a remix of SVD’s Joyenergizer and a remix collab with Hirshee.”

Now that the disco dust has settled somewhat in North America, what are your thoughts on EDM over there now? One high profile producer said to me yesterday he felt that the kids over there were starting to look for a more housier vibe. Thoughts on that?

“I haven’t noticed it myself but that seems to be the word on the street right now, I welcome it personally, I’d love a chance to bring a bit more funk into my productions.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning…

1. Bassjackers, Dyro – Grid

2. Ummet Ozcan, W&W – The Code

3. Lazy Rich – Insomnia (John Dahlback Remix)

4. Kairo Kingdom feat. Chris Jones – Scream

5. Showtek – Slow Down

6. Michael Woods – Platinum Chains

7. Brass Knuckles – Hurricane

8. Wolfgang Gartner – Anaconda

9. Hirshee, Sean Tyas – Salt Shaker

10. Zedd – Clarity (Style of Eye Remix)

One of the earliest albums you owned was the James Bond 007 soundtrack which included a disco version of the theme music. Which dance producer do you think would make a great James Bond?

“Hah, although I think Zedd has the swagger for it I’m not sure people could deal with a German Bond, so I’m gonna have to say R3hab, he’s the pretty boy of the scene right now.”

Who are the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to right now?

“Lucky Date, Bassjackers, Jacob Plant, Michael Woods and Kairo Kingdom.”

Talk us through your American Idol Drinking Game we’ve heard about?

“I wouldn’t class it as a drinking game as such, basically if the wife is in charge of the remote it’s usually what ends up being on, and I use it as an excuse to head off to the studio for a couple of hours!”

What is coming next from you studio wise?

“Definitely time to step it up a gear, looking to do a big follow up to Brainfreeze!”

Where have been some of the stand out shows for you over the winter?

“I’ve actually been enjoying some of the club shows in Canada a lot, I’m all about the intimate vibe where you can reach out and shake hands with the crowd.”

Will you be making the pilgrimage to Ibiza this summer?

“Ibiza isn’t exactly a hot-spot for electro house, but I’m open to offers if they’ll have me!”

And finally, what is your answer to those dreaded bouts of insomnia…?

“I never get it, I work too hard.”
