Full Intention

The boys are back in town – causing madness yet again

Interview : Dan Prince

Welcome back to DMCWORLD guys, you are yet again flavor of the month with another classic Full Intention release. This time it’s your ‘Icon’/Madness EP which has been receiving some heavy rotation in Ibiza this summer, Solomun in particular has been smashing it. You have had a real good cross section of DJs spinning the tunes, from Tensnake, Groove Armada to Joey Negro. Must make you happy you are appealing to all sorts of DJs out there…?

“Hey Dan, yes we’re both really happy the reactions to our new EP have been so awesome! We appreciate the support from across the board, it’s always great to have a cross section of DJ’s playing any release.”

Ibiza is in full flow again, with the odd exception every night is busy with some great new music being played. You coming out this summer?

“This year we made a conscious decision not to take on many gigs so we could really have a lock down in the studio. We had a few offers for Ibiza but nothing’s confirmed so far…”

Mike you visit some weird and wonderful places, last weeks DJ trip to Batumi Beach in Georgia sounded interesting…?

“Yes I played there two years ago and loved the place and was asked back. The club is situated right by the beach with it’s own swimming pool and with amazing buildings all around. Most people in the UK wouldn’t go there for a holiday because it involves two flights.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

Full Intention – Icon
Full Intention – Madness
Inner City – Big Fun (Full Intention Remix)
Solomun – Yes no maybe
Darius Syrossian – House is House
Ninetoes – Finder
Jon Cutler, E man – It’s Yours
Ten Walls – Gotham
Full Intention – Octavia
Hot Natured – Isis

We hear there are more studio releases coming our way from the Full Intention boilerhouse, what can you tell us about the ‘SEM’ and ‘Octavia’ tracks…

“Yes, we’ve been busy! SEM & Octavia will be the next release on our Full Intention imprint and follows the same vibe as Icon / Madness EP…”

What are your thoughts in where the US is with dance music at the moment, it seems the clubbers out there have started to learn about just how many diverse sounds there within dance music and are already moving away from the EDM sound. House music for instance is certainly on the rise…

“The US has always been a weird territory for us, we’ve sold plenty of records over there but it hasn’t been that busy for gigs. Hopefully now they’re moving away from EDM and getting back to real house music things will change…”

You have just been in the studio putting the final touches on your remix for Chris Turner’s latest single ‘Fly Away’, talk us through your rework…

“We both loved the vocal on this one so it wasn’t hard to get into this one. We’ve ended up keeping the most of the original parts but aded a more groovy bassline.”

What is coming out next for you guys remix wise, Big Fun’s ‘Inner City’ must be ready to drop…?

“Watch out for it We think KMS will release ‘Good Life’ first with ‘Big Fun’ following on afterwards…”

You were interviewed on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection show on Friday night, you claimed that all of this recent studio activity felt like a “mini comeback for Full Intention”. Is that how you feel, have you felt a little left behind recently…?

“To be honest we never really went away. It just seems that as house music is more popular again now everyone seems to take more notice of what we’re doing. We also decided to slightly deepen our sound to go back to how it was when we started in the 90’s.”

You two first met in the early 90s, Mike you were DJing in a south London club and invited Jon down to the studio for a jam. How quickly did it become apparent that you were onto something rather special as your styles clicked…

“We actually started jamming in a club originally but things didn’t happen overnight, I guess we had to work on our sound for a good few years before anyone really took notice but we both were 100% into what we were doing and just stuck at it.”

Do you ever argue about music?

“Haha, we used to, but things are somewhat more relaxed these days as we both tend to know straight away if somethings not right. I think once you have a clear direction in mind as to the style then things are pretty straightforward!”!

Who are some of the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to right now?

“People like Solomun and Jamie Jones…”

In an interview a few years back  you were asked what your proudest career moment to date had been…you answered the Grammy nomination and the first time spinning at Pacha in Ibiza. What would be your answer in 2013?

“Probably the same! And also it’s just really cool that we’re still making music full time…”

Finest record you have played to adance floor?

“There have been many fine records over the years from all the artists that we like. A moment that stuck in our minds has to be dropping “I’ll Be Waiting” in the Box at Ministry for the first time.”

Mike, I just interviewed Rob Roar this morning. Half the DMC office are divided on this one. Some are saying he is the nicest man in house music, I’m saying you! Thoughts on that?

“I think Rob is nicer than me!”

And finally, you were called classic disco dads on your facebook site last week, is there any signs of you two slowing down, or do you feel recharged for another decade rocking the dancelfoor?

“Hahaha, yes..thanks NGB…Mike is a disco dad but I’m not ready for that title just yet!! And yes, of course we are ready!”
