Goldfish & Blink

Here we go again! The boys from Kuala Lumpur making us jump

Interview : Dan Prince

Hey guys welcome to DMCWORLD, where in the world are you right now?

We’re in our home town of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia right now Dan.”

When I mentioned to The Buzz Chart office I was interviewing you today, they replied… “they are amazing, ask them if they are the only producers from Malaysia”. So, are you?

“There seems to be an uprising in the amount of producers but there are not many who are prominent on the worldwide stage, but there is one “HAZE” who is an amazing vocalist and producer who has garnered many awards with his track ‘Changes’ with Kings of Tomorrow. And there’s also another up n’coming producer who’s signed under Vicious records named Mr Fluff.”

A massive new release causing carnage on the dancefloor – ‘Tension’/Make You Jump’ which is flying in all of the charts. Talk us through the tracks…

Well ‘Tension’ has the influence of our track on Revealed ‘Here We Go Again”’but with more electro house elements infused in the gaps…we then wanted to try a tune with the one third notes and ‘MAKE YOU JUMP’ came along, Really happy Trice/Armada picked it up as an EP as they are both pretty banging but still very different.”

‘Tension’ in particular was one of the hits of ADE week in Amsterdam.  What was that experience like, who did you meet, where were the best parties, what were your highlights…?

“ADE was amazing, we met a lot of people who we conversed thru email like our new publishers, future labels we are on and also artistes we are collaborating with. One of the highlights was the I AM HARDWELL premiere where we had a look into Robbert’s life on the road and off, such an amazing time plus he is the new number 1, so it was fantastic. Party wise, the energy at the Revealed party at the Passenger Terminal was nuts, as they call it “UN-DUTCH”. It was our first time at Ziggodome for the Heineken Star club event and we must say the venue is a great place to hold big events.”

So tell us about the Malaysia club scene – let’s kick off with the big clubs…

“Zouk Club is where we hold our residency and it’s D club in KL…or to be honest you would say Malaysia, It’s the only club that invites international DJs consistently every month, DJs like Tiesto, Armin, Hardwell and a whole lot more have graced the decks. Currently, outdoor festivals have been really booming averaging once every two months in 2013, people seem to be really excited about them. The last one with Tiesto had about 25000 people.”

Who are some of the big DJs on the scene over there?

“There are not many ‘big’ DJs in our scene as it’s a new generation turnover, back in the late nineties to early 2000’s there used to be a few who were very active locally…but not anymore.”

Who is rated as DJ God when he arrives on tour?

“Tiesto, Hardwell, Armin and Dash Berlin are really huge here. Laidback Luke is also very popular when he hits the clubs.”

How upfront are the Malaysian clubbers with their knowledge of music?

“I think with the internet a lot of people are upfront with the current dance music as it’s so accessible, but the whole hype of deep house / tech house hasn’t really exploded as most of the clubs here are alcohol driven.”

What are the government’s stance on clubbing and drugs in Malaysia?

“So far they have been supportive with the permits and licenses for outdoor dance music festivals, fingers crossed it stays the same way. As for drugs they have always been very strict.”

Goldfish, you have quite a varied selection of artists you admire, from the Hip Hop genius of Kanye West to the electronic sounds of Hardwell. Who were the artists you were listening to growing up that helped sway you dance music’s way?

“Michael Jackson, De La Soul, The Neptunes to name but a few.”

DJ heroes?

“Hardwell, SHM, Laidback Luke, A-Trak and Boys Noize.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

FTampa – Hero

Dyro – Go Down

Hardwell & W&W – Jumper

Project T (Martin Garrix)

Deorro – Lose it

Alesso & Calvin Harris – Under Control,

Singapore with Hardwell looked bonkers in September – where have some of your stand out gigs been this summer?

“Well Hardwell in Singapore we didn’t DJ at, we actually went to watch the show. But when we were back stage with Hardwell he told us that he was gonna play ‘Here We Go Again’ and would like to invite us on stage! That moment was unreal. There were a lot of Malaysians present at the show too, so lots of Malaysian flags were up in the air when we stood up. Some great gigs this year was the Future Music Festival that happened in March and also the show we played with Tiesto last month was crazy.”

Not many people know this, but Goldfish and Blink are really good at…?

“Synchronised Dancing.”

How do you compliment each other in the studio, who excels in what department?

“We work very well as a team as we both like the same things, two pairs of ears are always better than one so we usually fill in the missing gaps. But if we were to point out where we excel in production, Goldfish – melodies, Blink – mixing.”

Do you ever argue about music?

“Hardly as we both do have the same direction where we are heading…”

What is coming out next from you guys?

“We have 2 collabs that we are super excited about, can’t really tell you any more but we’ve been playing it out regularly and it works well.”

And finally, what is with the DJ names?????

“Dan, we have no idea either!”
