The Familia superstar rolls up his sleeves for some Christmas Trade

Interview : Nicky Trax

Hey welcome to DMCWORLD – where in the world are you right now?

“Thank you Nicky. Actually I’m on the Eurostar on my way to do Familia in Belgium.”

When you travel abroad, do your sets change if at all from territory to territory?

“It’s best to do a little research first, see who else is playing etc. but always have enough material with you. Hopefully a DJ is booked because his or her style is right for the club and the crowd. We’ve got a Familia event in Barcelona soon and the crowd are really into Techno, but tonight in Belgium will be leaning a little more to Housier side of Tech, so it all depends.”

You readily admit that in the early days you were quite shy when it came to your DJing, but quite quickly “the beast came out!” How hard was it for you to be able to communicate with your audience and immerse yourself with them?

“I’m not sure about shy, but I’m a perfectionist and getting the opportunity to play some high profile places was wonderful on one hand, but nothing beats experience, so I moved away for a period of time and was lucky enough to get myself a residency in a club out of town where I learnt to read the crowd and all that went with it. When you’re DJing and you’re feeling the music as much as the crowd, everyone’s enveloped by the sounds it can be a quite magical and powerful experience.”

Another massive weekend is looming for you with your show at the fabulous Trade at Christmas party at Egg…you love Trade events right and how did you come to get involved with this legendary club night?

“Actually I came from a theatre background and so was choreographing a few events for Trade, then Laurence Malice asked me to be the Promotional Manager of their Ibiza season with Manumission, which eventually led to me playing to the club.”

Were you a ‘Trade Baby’ and what are your best memories of Trade?

“I certainly was a Trade baby, it was a place I not only discovered what I was into musically, I’d be the first in line when a new album came out, sometime bagging a copy before release date and proudly showcasing it a house party before of course heading off to the club itself. Best memories were probably taking people there who hadn’t been before, it’s weekly takeover of Turnmills really was like no other club on earth.”

London is flying the flag for clubbing yet again with so dozens of great clubs all over the capital, none more so than Egg – why do you love this venue?

“Egg London is without doubt one of the best venues we have here in the captal, the sound, lights, reachability to the crowd of the performing DJs and outstanding atmosphere, the ever changing space and outside areas all make it the venue of choice for so many.”

Where were some of the underground clubs you were hanging out back in the day?

“From the wages I got from my very first job I got myself a home studio and used to lock myself away for hours on end working on tracks well before I even stepped inside a club, and then when I discovered clubbing it all kinda made sense! Years later making tracks and even playing B2B with some of the heroes that inspired me in the first place.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

Per Hammar – Fever Mode

Gaga – WMC

Harvey Mckay – Cinnamon Kiss

Jonathan Cowan – Uh Oh (Crocodrills Remix)

Mendo – La Krika

Christian Smith – Get It Done (Ramon Tapia Remix)

Victor Kaman – Wah

Tommy Declerque – Push

Mathias Kaden – Propeller

Fabio Ferro – Terraza

Anthem of the summer?

“I think Anthem of the Summer has to be Ninetoes -Finder and I’m sure many will say the same, even for a DJ like me who plays a more Techno set these days weaving in the original instrumental version guarantees a huge reaction. Future anthem for the season is Fabio Ferro’s Terraza, as you’ll see have included in my chart. Fabio’s our main resident at Familia with the biggest names around supporting his work.”

And how is the promoting going once again…

“Well I am currently the promoter of Familia which is once a month in London, we’ve started touring Europe, it’s all very exciting.”

How did you enjoy 2013 and what were your highlights?

“2013 was an amazing year for me, I’ve played some of the most rewarding sets and achieved some very pleasing recognition for productions that really know their stuff and from producers we’ve been booking. It’s very much been about promoting this year though and putting a lot of energy into a very exciting project.”

Who are some of the young up and coming producers we should be looking out for in 2014?

“More established now but Harvey Mckay and Jewel Kid continue to be ones to watch and Fabio Ferro of course!”

And finally, let’s get the Trade faithful excited for your appearance at Egg  – what is the one song you can’t wait to drop?

“Adoo, Unique (Cro) – The Zoo – For me a Trade-esque groove if ever there was one!”
