Solomon Grey – Firechild EP – Black Butter

Solomon Grey makes electronic music to be heard and enjoyed, at home, in the clubs and all the way live. In Firechild, Solomon’s yearning falsetto is married with orchestrated strings, wavering synth-drenched melodies then crackly drums and instruments to create a blissed out composition for the digital generation. Last Century Man is an album track par excellence with its laidback instrumental swell, lazy brass refrain and stacked vocal aural caress. Once the beat kicks in, it becomes a dreamy lullaby or love her by for grown ups. Think Depeche Mode with funk and soul or picture Soulwax with Lewis Taylor on open mic and you’re on the right lines. Add the broken beats and warped, growling sub-bass distortion of Allmostt for a booty shaking rewiring of ‘Firechild’ well worth its place on a ‘Deviation’ playlist. And to finish, Pablo Nouvelle transforms it into a crisp, shimmering and spacious soundscape that is as luxurious as it is languorous. It’s my hope that Solomon Grey is heading towards an album release and Mercury Music Prize territory.
