I have had a soft spot for The Roots since back in the day – one of the few rap / hip hop outfits that have stayed true to the roots of quality music, real life and conscious politics and the new album ‘When The People Cheer’ promises much in the way of maintaining this quality. First outing ‘When The People Cheer’ wraps a slippery r n b pop female vocal with a southern twang and a male around a music box piano loop and lyrics with a bite as subtle yet potent as a Brazilian wandering spider. ‘Tomorrow’ has a whistled intro that burrows its way into your head like a white mouse in a sawdust bed, whilst Raheem De Vaughan’s deep, soulful tones is a perfect summer block party jam. The lush, jazzy piano outro is a rare treat too. This is great music with no sell out. Buy it today.
