This release from Zero 7 makes me wonder whether they stopped smoking weed in favour of MDMA since the ‘Science Digital’ EP sees them departin from their triphop roots to embrace a clubbier and more chart / dancefloor oriented sound. The lead track ‘Simple Science’ – has that magical Lykke Li ‘I Follow Rivers’ keyboard and synth vibe about it. The lethal hooky chorus married with a falsetto male vocal takes it firmly into daytime radio territory. ‘Red, Blue & Green’ is more the Zero 7 we know and love, with its balearic, trickling synths, seductive bass line and arrangement that rises and falls like the ocean, waxes and wanes like the moon and blossoms like a world full of timelapse poppies.
‘Take Me Away’ is an uptempo disco treat. The synths, oily, slithering funk bassline and acid bright vocals, pours over the chorus in a foamy, frothy ambient wash. ‘U Know’ clings to dark piano chords at the outset, then brightens with compressed synths, vocal clips and trickling keys for a housey instrumental outing. It’s Zero 7 Jum but not as we know them.
