Great to encounter music from Michael Ballus whose left of centre approach to production feels more organic than most, plus is also totally engaging in the process. Created solely via analogue machines each track retains a warm, soulful element while sounding like his imagination is running riot. ‘Raining Day’ contains emotive chords, sassy percussion and is crammed full of exploratory soundscapes that roll atmosphere and stereo into one. ‘Winter’ proceeds with a sense of Detroit as punchy drum machines and swirling pads combine, leaving ‘Time After Time’ to drive the funkiness home with more addictive beats and a commanding set of Rhodes hits, plus old-time movie samples for weird measure.
