Picture the amyl nitrate fuelled disco scene in the William Friedkin thriller ‘Cruising’. Al Pacino is asked to dance, accepts, takes centre stage dressed in a black wife-beater, then the amyl soaked bandana changes everything. Cascandy’s rewiring of Jimi Tenor’s ‘Take Me Baby’ is much like this. There’s a fierce heartbeat, a slippery pulse ; a tension that mounts in intensity like an amyl fuelled rush of blood to the brain. It chugs like a cross-country train, whilst the scraping, high pitched strings and penny whistle effects whizz by like in a blur of greens, blues, yellows and fluffy whites, then the gruff semi-sung, semi-spoken vocal delivers the priceless lyrics ‘Take Me Baby, take me now, take me to the edge of explosion’ taking care of the rest. It filters, pitches, flanges, whooshes and zips then slows into the station like nothing ever happened. Top marks. Indispensable.
