Geil – My Aim – (SSOH)

SSOH, the label run by legendary French DJ Claude Monnet is now over 20 years old, but with releases like this one, shows it is still at the forefront of the techno scene. Geil is a longtime colleague of Monnet, and he himself has been working and playing all over the world for over 10 years, and his pedigree comes shining through on this 2 tracker. Working under the new moniker Geil, his releases have been more intimate, more personal and wholly dedicated to atmospheric tech and house. This change in character hasn’t been to the detriment of the music he is creating. Class is permanent after all. My Aim is slowly taken over and ruled by a twang hanging over rolling bass. It is seductively spooky. Add to this some dark, spooky voices and that sense of foreboding intrigue is only amplified. Altogether, it is an excellently constructed track, full of thought and composed with care – always a winning recipe. The 2nd track is a remix from French duo Melokolektiv, and is more up tempo and carries a deeper, thicker bass. Both tracks, in their own way, have a forlorn and personal resonance. They are the sort of tracks you could envisage being played in a cold, glass filled 50 Shades of Grey-esque penthouse as well as on a sunny beach in the early hours of the morning. However you prefer it, you can’t deny SSOH have another killer release on their hands.
