DAFT PUNK
HUMAN AFTER ALL
EMI

After the relatively safe delivery that was previous single ‘Technologic’, this is an excellent return to form for the parisian duo. Unquestionably one of the highlights of their eponymous last album, ‘Human After All’ is a vocoder-led song – you can’t help singing to – that stylishly kicks pop music into the future with pleasurable ease. A plethora of edgy producers get drafted in to provide raw variations: Justice do their dirty/groovy thang, Ed Banger labemate Sebastian goes for the distorted funk fusion from hell and Alter Ego aren’t much more merciful with a fierce 5am techno stomper. Luckily DFA’s The Juan Maclean calm things down with a fast, esoteric-house re-rub. However best of the lot has to be Emperor Machine’s new-wavey rework, also the most faithful to the original song. With his loony yet inspired mix of dubbed-out, soundtracky indie-disco, Andrew Micham’s pet project (on the side of Chicken Lips) has turned heads this year. His fresh bass-guitar led reinterpretation here clearly shows why.
