Grammy nominated Steve Edwards is simply one of the most successful singer/songwriter/performers in house music. He is the magic voice behind global dance floor hits such as Bob Sinclar & Fisher ‘World Hold On’, Cassius ‘Sound Of Violence’ and Axwell’s ‘Sunrise’. Steve has also worked with many other acclaimed artists in electronic dance music including Basement Jaxx, Sly & Robbie, Xpress 2, Charles Webster, Michael Gray, Yves Larock, Pete Tong, Kings Of Tomorrow, Chicane, Roger Sanchez, Shapeshifters and L’Tric. As his new collaboration with Jason Herd, ‘Brothers & Sisters’, lands on Bohemian Disco, DMCWorld goes Back To Mine with the incredible Steve Edwards.
Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach – Toledo
As a fan of great songwriting, these are two of my all time favourite writers from different eras coming together to create a classic story of love, loss and geography.
Talk Talk – Happiness Is Easy
One of the most underrated bands of the past 40 years but a major influence on me and this song sums up their greatness for introspection, spirituality, existentialism, wordplay and musicianship.
Glen Campbell – Wichita Lineman
Written by one of my favourite writers Jimmy Webb, Glen Campbell delivers a song that I find both haunting and uplifting but actually a bit weird too. It has no chorus and it’s about isolation but even as a kid it made me want to go to the wide open space of Wichita.
The Mamas and the Papas – California Dreaming
I do like a song that feels melancholic and hopeful at the same time and this is perfect. It’s very evocative of an era and gives me a sense of what the hippie 60s were like because I’d have loved to have been there in another life.
Daft Punk – Digital Love
I love Daft Punk and this song is genius. It’s futuristic yet sounds old and just makes me smile every time I hear it. Perfect electronica.
Bee Gees – Too Much Heaven
One of their most underrated songs, this song about total love brings a tear when I hear it and the vocals and production are sheer class.
Stevie Wonder – Innervisions (whole album)
The whole album is pure genius. Not one bad song on it and a game changer for soul music. Massive influence on my music to this day with shades of blaxploitation, inner city hardships, spirituality and love. Hard to believe he was only in his early twenties when he did this.
Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (whole album)
This album is like one long song from start to finish. It was unusual for such a mainstream black artist to sing about topics like war, climate change, ecology and politics back in the early 70s. It’s an absolute piece of art to me which stands up today cos we’re still guilty of the same shit, different day.
Beach Boys – God Only Knows
Just beautiful. Changed pop music forever IMO. Another haunting yet uplifting song of existential love and the vocals are sublime. Brian Wilson was like a modern day Mozart.
Kate Bush – The Man With the Child In His Eyes
There was and is, nobody like Kate Bush and this song is her at her finest. A haunting performance and production and perfect for after hours contemplation.
Jason Herd & Steve Edwards ‘Brothers & Sisters’ is out now on Bohemian Disco.
