This is a big one [and I’m not just talking about the bacon torpedo poking out of the threesome scenario on the cover!]. Paul Woolford has made thrilling appearances on labels like Junior Boys Own and has a formidable DJ reputation but now takes a major step in setting up his Intimacy label as a field for him to run rampant. The four multi-genred tracks are only in the House section because he’s a Basics resident and the original spirit of acid house rears like a bison’s stiffy. The title track plants snarling acid over a dark, minimal clank, ‘Journey To Java’ percolates deliriously over a glorious mid-80s Chicago-style bassline, ‘Surrender’ ejaculates UR-Detroit motifs over meatier riffage and ‘Stalactites’ is a moody acid-electro funker with Motor City strings. Pioneering graphic designer Trevor Jackson is on board to ensure that dance music’s visual mystique is kept intact, and does so with erm, knobs on. Fitting, as the music’s the bollocks.
