In 1994, Jockey Slut was a refreshingly irreverent magazine which injected some fun and piss-taking into dance music. The editors decided to try and translate their sense of whoopee into a club and I played at one of six parties they staged in Manchester called Discopogo. That November these became regular weekly events at Sankeys Soap renamed Bugged Out and they’ve never looked back as, despite the magazine being consigned to corporate hell, the club has gone from strength to strength, now based at The End. The club always spotlighted the pioneers and mavericks in electronic dance music as tracks like Slam’s ‘Positive Education’ and Green Velvet’s ‘Flash’ became anthems, their perpetrators becoming favourites behind the club’s decks. I played there several times and can safely say it was one of the most up-for-it crowds I’ve ever encountered. Now they’ve decided to stick some of those anthems onto a compilation, spread over an action-packed the CDs which provide an unparalleled history of dancefloor titans from the harder, more creative end since 1993. Names ranging from stalwarts like Slam, Chemicals, Wink, Daft Punk and Felix Da Housecat to more recent monsters from Alter Ego, Tomas Anderson and Lindstrom. They should congratulate themselves on lighting up so many nights and now presenting the evidence in such a glorious barrage. What me, messy?
