Back To Mine with Just Her

In recent years, Just Her has deservedly carved out a niche as one of electronic music’s go to producers, with a sound and style full of emotional depth. It has seen her release tracks on a slew of notable labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Global Underground, Anjunadeep, Circus, Sincopat, her own Constant Circles imprint – and of course Selador, where she makes a welcome return with her essential double header ‘Will We Ever Learn / Away From Here’. A long-time lyricist and topline writer, Just Her is now increasingly adding her own vocals to her productions. “It’s not easy sharing something as personal as your own lyrics and vocals with the entire world, but hopefully I’m creating something people can connect to.” That Is most definitely the case with ‘Will We Ever Learn’, whose words are very pertinent to the turbulent times we are currently experiencing, bemoaning as it does the mindset of “closing doors and building walls” that is stunting progress and pushing back against hard-fought for freedoms. The low-slung musical backdrop is suitably stirring, hitting that sought after sweet spot where melancholy meets uplift.

Just Her will be joining Selador’s Steve Parry and Dave Seaman, and the inimitable Danny Howells, for the launch of the Seladoria club concept – all roads lead to London’s E1 club on Friday September 24th. In the meantime sit back and rejoice in one of the coolest Back To Mine selection’s you’ll ever hear…

The Knife – Heartbeats
The Knife are just awesome and currently celebrating their 20 year anniversary. There are so many tracks I could pick and they have always been super forward thinking in their sound, but this one is an all time favourite (Some might know this from the Jose Gonzalez cover which is also great, but this was the original and best version).

Bjork – Joga
I’ve always been completely obsessed with Bjork and her incredible creativity. I have all her albums on CD since the original ‘Debut’ LP and still listen to them all. In fact I’m pretty sure that the first three albums changed my life and helped shape me musically. This song is pure emotion.

Tricky – Overcome
I grew up on electronica and trip hop, mainly from the usual suspects like Massive Attack and Portishead. I’m also a huge fan of Tricky, even though he was a little more under the radar at the time. The Maxinquaye album was a masterpiece and I get chills listening to this track even today.

Nina Simone – See-Line Woman (Masters At Work Remix)
10 minutes of pure groove, I have this on vinyl and it still sounds fresh.

Oumou Sangaré – Moussolou
I remember getting this album on cassette and playing it in my little Ford Fiesta (my first car!) and being completely mind blown haha! Oumou Sangaré is just a unique and legendary Malian singer who is still going strong today. Her music is just so moving and beautiful. I often wonder if it was this album that sparked my connection with African culture, and if this could be partly why South Africa has become a second home to me and a place that I love to play.

Kate Bush – Cloud Busting
No chart would be complete without Kate Bush.. the singer, songwriter, producer, dancer, performer, trailblazer. I have my Dad to thank for playing all her albums in the car everywhere we went. A true inspiration.

Agnes Obel – Familiar
I discovered Agnes Obel and this song thanks to the TV series Dark (which I was completely obsessed with btw and the music curation on the show was another level). She is a truly unique artist and in some ways reminds me of a modern day Kate Bush.

Soul II Soul – Back to Life
I actually don’t think an explanation is needed for this one. Just hit play and feel the vibes.

Gallago – Lost Signal
There is a deeper meaning to this track for me, because not only has this been an absolute afterparty staple for my friendship group over the last few years, but Gallago actually came and performed this track live at my wedding! Straight up sunrise and group hug vibes.

Laurie Anderson – O Superman
Laurie Anderson is a true Avante Garde pioneer, so she had to be included. Amazing to think this track got to Number 2 in the UK Charts in the 80s. I’d love to just throw this on in the early hours and really confuse everyone at the after party.
