It started with rave tapes from ‘The Eclipse’ in Coventry. Home to the very first 24hr rave up in the UK. I missed the rave by a couple of years but in 1993 using my milk round money at the age of 14, I brought this double CD …also it had a massive nipple on the front!!!!
The Prodigy – Music for a Jilted generation
Around a year later came possibly one of the most iconic albums of the jilted generation. It had the beats, the bass, the hard moody synths, impeccable breakdowns. The mixture of rock and dance. It was all there, full of energy. Highlights for me… ‘Their Law’, ‘Voodoo People’,’Poison’ and saving the best til last ‘No Good (Start The Dance)’.
Mixmag presents: Zeitgeist: New Directions.
The first of my two cover cd’s would be this mixmag presents: Zeitgeist: New Directions. House puts the breaks on Mixed by Allister Whitehead & Dave Seaman. Still sounding fresh today.
Red Jerry – DJ Mag Cover mix
The second CD cover mix is by Hooj Choons boss Red Jerry. It was for DJ Mag in 2001. Just bought that swing and groove building through Marshall Jefferson vs. Noosa Heads ‘mushrooms’ and rolling through to tracks and remixes from Omid 16B, Peace division and Space manoeuvres.
Pulse featuring Antoinette Roberson – ‘The Lover That You Are’. (Soul Solution Vocal Mix)
Switching things in another direction again is this absolute banger. It’s old, its gold, big and ballsy with massive drums, strings, vocals and remixed by Soul Solution to boot. Still a play on any dance floor.
Armand Van Helden ‘Witch Doktor’ (The Dark Ages Mix)
I have been a fan of Arman Van Helden after hearing ‘Witch Doktor’ (The Dark Ages mix) on a cream compilation. I was obsessed with the whole dark and moody vibe. Minimal as hell but everything just sat there throbbing away. All the mixes are great on this but ‘The Dark Ages’ mix gets me every time.

Being a fan and having a little vain moment. I did a remix of ‘Witch Doktor’ more pumping and driving for today’s dark dance floor. It’s been well received and supported by a few heads….Oh it’s a FREE download?
The Chemical Brothers ‘MAH’
After seeing The Chemical Brothers in November’19 on their ‘No Geography’ Tour with my mate Sam and Andy I couldn’t leave them off this list. If you get the chance to see them live you won’t regret it. I’ve always got them on Tidal on Shuffle but this time i’m ‘MAH’ and I ain’t gonna take it no more!!!!!!
Patrick Swayze – She’s Like The Wind
To finish this little afters how about some 80’s power ballad. I know and it has to be a big one. So how about a proper smoochy downer. He only did the one song but boy it was a biggy.
Tromino – Acid House Music / Protect (Tromino)
Tromino continues to impress with the first release on his own new self-titled imprint. It comes after support from the likes of Sam Divine of Defected and marks another big step up. Tromino has always been submerged in music, from early production courses to owning record shops and DJ equipment stores. His style takes influence from the past, the present and the future and hotbeds like Chicago and Detroit with plenty of acid, chunky beats and dirty vocals adding extra flavour. His new label will be home to his own music and kicks off with a fine statement of intent. Standout opener ‘Acid House Music’ gets you on your toes from the off with nimble drums and bass and chattering claps. Pinging kick drums and lively stabs all add fuel to the fire and ensure maximum destruction as the beat drops after an eerie breakdown. Then comes ‘Protect’, another full-on house track with cantering kicks and urgent claps. It’s a track that ebbs and flows, with sustained pads bringing the soul and explosive drops all powering you to the next level.
