After a long career spanning almost 20 years as promoter and resident of heavy weight Sheffield brands Love to be…, Plug, Shuffle and most recently Muzik Events it’s time for Lee Freeman to simply be Lee Freeman. Under the guises of LJ Freeman and L&F Projekt Lee has warmed up and closed down for pretty much every major artist in the world from Sasha to Eric Prydz, Seth Troxler, Patrick Topping, Maya Jane Coles, Sonny Fodera, Denis Sulta, Jamie Jones and everyone in between. Production wise releasing on Phonetic, Stylus, 64K Recordings, Revolucion Records, Dazed and Confused, P and S Music, Amongst Others and his very own Muzik records has seen Lee play across all major clubs and festivals worldwide.
Over lockdown Lee’s felt something was missing and after some serious soul-searching he decided he wanted to find himself again, play and produce from the heart rather than constantly adapting to the current styles, sounds and sets due to the varied nature of warming up for different guest everyone weekend. The result is Lee Freeman is now playing and producing as quite simply Lee Freeman, expect soulful house, piano driven classics and some serious groovy organs and basslines on his brand-new label and aptly named ‘Find Yourself Recordings’.
We caught up with Lee ahead of his new single ‘Need Ya Want Ya’ out Feb 26th on his Find Yourself Recordings…
Hey Lee a huge welcome to DMCWORLD. Please introduce to yourself our readers…
Hi DMC and thanks for having me! My name is Lee Freeman and I’m from Sheffield in the north of the UK.
Where are you today?
At home in Sheffield with my fiancée Natalie, my mother-in-law Wendy, my son Logan and my 2 dogs, Frankie and Alfie. Living the lockdown dream haha!
How would you describe your new music and sound?
Big pianos and huge vocals all the way, going right back to the very routes of the sound that led to me falling in love with house music in the first place.
What was the best night out you have ever had?
Speed Queen at Warehouse in Leeds is hands down the best atmosphere I’ve ever experienced bar none. A workers party in Ibiza at Kanya in 2001 aptly named ‘The Slut Party’ was a very close second. If you know you know.
What is your favorite tune of all time?
Ah man, this is always the hardest question in the world to answer when you love music so much! I’m going with Faithless – Insomnia.
What was the 1st record you bought?
Alison Limerick – Where Love Lives.
What was the last record you bought?
You feat Chenai – Martin Ikin.
What are your current top 3 tracks?
You feat Chenai – Martin Ikin
Got Me Lovin – K69
Nothing More – Marc Leaf
When was the last time you danced to a track or a DJ?
Just now listening to the above Marc Leaf track. I very often put music on at home and dance, especially if I feel my energy level dropping in the afternoon. It always works and resets my mind every time, it’s my own personal form of meditation!
How do you escape?
When not through music my next biggest escape is Carp Fishing – although I firmly believing creating a life that you never need to escape from, that’s where true happiness lies.
What is the best piece of music advice you have been given?
Chasing gigs is counter-productive. All that matters is fitting in as many hours as you can in the studio crafting your sound. If you want to become an international touring artist, in the short term it is a waste of energy trying to hustle for gigs when that energy and time can be spent making music – things like social media content, DJ bookings etc. are a by-product of all that work in the studio. People get this the wrong way round and I see artists having photo shoots and building socials before they have even released a track! The quality of the music will always do the talking.
You are having one last party who dead or alive would be on the guest list?
Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, MK, Pamela Anderson, Tyson Fury, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jess Glynn, Peter Kay, David Hasselhoff and Amanda Holden…!
‘Need Ya, Want Ya’ is released on Feb 26th, 2021 on Find Yourself Recordings
