Lucas & Steve

Massive tune alert! Internationally acclaimed DJ/Producer duo Lucas & Steve return to the dancefloor having revamped one of the biggest songs from the 90s – Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’ now hitting us as a hot blooded dance music smash. Spinnin’ Records does it again…

Hey guys, a huge welcome to DMCWORLD, where on this lunatic planet are you today?

We’re at the studio, like always these days!!

What is the best piece of new music you have heard recently?

That crazy song by Maroon5 – beautiful mistakes – is really really great.

Really exciting times for you at the moment thanks to your new single ‘No Diggity’, a collab with Grammy Award winning Black Street. How did this collab happen, who’s masterplan was it?

The idea of this collab originates in a hotelroom in Portugal in 2019. After a festival that we played at, we ripped a really low quality vocal recording from YouTube because we couldn’t find anything better at the time. We just started messing around with that on my laptop and it became pretty cool really quickly. After our label heard it they loved it, but told us the challenge to clear the sample or get Blackstreet on board for a collab was huge and very unlikely to succeed.  We initially got a ‘no, please don’t touch this!’ from Blackstreet. However, after they’d heard the track they we’re all over it from the moment they heard it for the first time and wanted to collab on it.

Please talk us through the sound and history of the track…

What can I say…It’s 2021 house-music vibe combined with 90s hip-hop. If you heard it you’ll understand what I mean. We recorded the vocals with Blackstreet for this track and it’s incredible to see what great musicians they are. They’re really bringing that 90s vibe in the recording, even adding talk-boxes. An edge like this is something you hardly ever see these days.

You’ve also just snatched an Edison Award, congratulations! How has this momentous moment felt?

Thanks! It felt amazing to win this. In the Netherlands this is probably the biggest musical honour your can get. We won the award for our album Letters To Remember that we release in October last year. Really honored!

So gotta touch on the subject that has dominated the world; how has the past year been for you, how have you been spending your time and what have you learnt about yourself and the world we live in?

We spent/spend our time at the studio making music and growing as producers, songwriters. We seized the opportunity to learn as much as we can on music. That’s a little plus on the covid-situation for us. Also spending some more time with our friends and family feels really great of course.

Okay let’s get personal for a moment…

Favourite film of all time?

Couples retreat

Childhood celebrity crush?

Jennifer Aniston

Your most cherished album?

Letters to Remember! Of course it’s lame to name your own but our debate album will always to be special to us.

The last time you cried?

Chinese hotpot

A tune you wish you’d have made?

Anything by Calvin Harris!

Your earliest memory of music as a child?

Lucas: My mom playing the piano (she’s a pro)

Steve: Listening to his parents’ disco records

Was music the only career choice for you or was there another life path you could have taken?

Lucas got his bachelor in Psychology and a master in Economics during his breakthrough. Would probably have done something in that direction and/or entrepreneurial.

Steve’s got a thing for aviation and would probably have been a pilot.

What was your first break into the music industry?

Playing drums and piano when I was five.

Who were the guys you were looking up to in the early days?

Calvin Harris, Avicii, Tiësto. They all released records that we feel will always timeless
