Parx

Parx aka Alex Cramp has come a long way since washing hair at his Mum’s salon. He’s released on Ministry of Sound and TMTR (with plenty of support from the Radio 1 elite), clocked millions of streams online, and now he’s dropping his latest offering ‘Two Step’ on Perfect Havoc where the one to watch showcases his crisp, pumping, deep house side. Here Parx talks about being a production chameleon, the song he wished he’d wrote, and what’s actually in those martini glasses he’s often pictured with…

Welcome to DMC Parx. Let’s get the formal introductions out of the way first. What’s your name and where d’you come from?

Hey. I’m Parx, I grew up in Kent but currently living in London.

Where did it all start for you?

After school, instead of university, I went to a music college in London called Point Blank – loads of big producers have come out of that college which is cool. I started off wanting to make EDM like the Swedish House Mafia, Deadmau5 etc, but ending up changing to more deep house later on.

Your new single ‘Two Step’ is a proper dancefloor stomper! What type of record makes Parx get on the dancefloor?

Haha most tracks with a groove will, I love listening to old soul / disco records to be honest. Quincy Jones’ records are banging and they have so much groove to them.

Would you describe yourself as a bit of a production chameleon? The sound on your previous releases varies – for example ‘Two Step’ and ‘Bang!’ are quite different from your cover of Ce Ce Penniston’s ‘Finally’.

Yeah, I suppose I do. I’ve always loved producers who can do more than just one sound and I feel like you can express yourself more by making tracks in different styles, especially if you’re producing house music. Every day I start a new idea and try to make it different to the last one. Bang and Two Step are a bit more clubby whereas with Finally it was a vocal led track.

What other new music do you have lined up for the rest of the year?

I’m really excited about this year. I have loads of new music that I’m currently finishing, and I feel like I’ve really found my sound that will help me stand out from the rest.

Did you grow up in a music household? Were you encouraged to listen to and make music?

My parents never played instruments, but they love music. My mum listens to loads of soul / disco records from the 70’s and 80’s and my dad is more into bands like The Verve or Oasis. I grew up listening to a lot of different music.

What (non-music) jobs have you done whilst climbing the music industry ladder?

The one that always makes people laugh is that I used to work in my mum’s hairdressers, washing hair, blow dries and making teas etc. I’m very good at head massages haha.

What’s your favourite tipple? You always seen to be holding a martini glass!

I do love a Porn Star Martini haha. I like most alcohol to be honest apart from Champagne.

What is your go-to ‘inspiration song’?

It varies with how I’m feeling at the time but normally it’s George Benson – Give Me The Night. If I could have written one song it would be that!

What labels are you digging at the moment?

I’m really liking what Club Sweat are releasing, some really cool tracks that have come out recently. Also FFRR are releasing some bangers.

What are your 5 Hottest Records right now?

Endor – Pump It Up

Pablo Bravas – Gimme Extra Pineapple On My Pizza

OFFAIAH – Soldier

Will Easton – Pyro

TCTS – Not Ready For Love

Where can we catch you DJing this year?

We are waiting to confirm but hopefully around England soon.
