DMCWORLD say KEEP IT DISCO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a great name, tell us where the concept came from?
A lot of our music is aimed at DJs and clubs, so we wanted a name that was exciting, and full of energy that connected to the disco era and clubbers.
Coming from a background of success, does this influence your sound, or does it inspire a new approach?
Yes, we want our sound to be a mixture of big disco house and italo tracks that inspire huge anthemic moments.
Andy, now you’re stepping out from solo production to a duo, how does the balance actually work in the studio?
It works really well actually, I do a lot of the production stuff, Cassie works on vocal hooks and vocal ideas.
You both have a long term connection, how did this start and what does it mean to a working relationship?
Cassie was a dancer with Madison Avenue (my previous act), from the very start we connected on an emotional and musical level.. As we have worked together for so long in all areas of life we have worked out a really good working relationship, complimenting who works best in what areas. We’ve always had very similar ideas with everything which helps a lot.
Who’s the boss? No really, who’s the boss?
Ha Ha! We’re both pretty bossy.
Your press shots show immense character, are you both as vibrant in daily life?
Cassie is definitely a very vibrant character, especially coming from a dance and performance background. She also has her down time with yoga and meditation to keep her balanced.
Cassie, what does Disco mean to you?
Disco conjures up images in my mind of the clubs in the 70s when there were glittering disco balls, neon lights, dancing, glamour, excess and liberation.
The term retro means so a mix of things to many people. Is this a cheeky reference to the glory days of dance, a sound that remains at the core of the act, or do you both see this as a modern incarnation of clubland with a futuristic approach?
We see it as a combination of both. We love the sounds of classic disco tracks, they had a certain sound and style. I imagine from all the great music at the time making disco and funk, then we like to connect that to a more 2021 future club sound.
Share 3 of your favourite releases, or remixes we should know:
Don’t Call Me Baby – Madison Avenue
Who The Hell Are You – Madison Avenue or You’re Body (Andy Van Remix) – Tom Novy
Never Say Never – Vandalism
Last year was a testing year for everyone, did you use the time wisely?
Yes, we spent a lot of time working on new Super Disco Club ideas & track concepts. We made over a dozen Super Disco Club bootlegs, and also did a lot of live streams to connect with clubbers stuck at home in lockdown (especially in Melbourne as we had the longest and toughest lockdown of anywhere in the world).
Your live streams and viral flavoured videos are always unique and connect clubbers. Will this remain an action you’ll do into the future?
Yes, and we’ve actually moved it all to TikTok, and within 1 month we have 5,000+ followers and 25,000 likes.. It’s so great on TikTik at the moment and we can pretty well do whatever we want. We are having a lot of fun being creative with the platform and we’re seeing audiences connect to our disco throwbacks. You can follow us at https://www.tiktok.com/@superdiscoclub
If you weren’t in music where would you be, and what would you be doing?
Andy Van: That’s a hard one as I’ve been into music since a super young age. I did wanna be a carpenter or builder when I was 18, so maybe that.
Cassie Van: I would see myself as an interior designer.
So Australia’s back clubbing, how does it feel and is anything different?
It feels even more exciting probably because we and the crowds appreciate it so much more now. It was a little strange at first being back in a crowded club after such a long hiatus, but now it’s all good and the energy in the room is ecstatic.
How would you describe your sound as a DJ duo?
You can expect exciting disco sounds, ranging from classic disco anthems to current disco house tracks, and also LOTS of super sneaky Super Disco Club Bootlegs that we make almost every week.
Where is your favourite venues to play (past or present)?
In Australia, I used to love Family in Brisbane and HQ in Adelaide. Currently Albion in Melbourne is huge, 1500+ people every week. Worldwide, I loved so many venues, but one of my favourites would have to be Manumission in Ibiza.
If someone didn’t know Super Disco Club how would you introduce the act?
Classic disco sounds, merging into current club styles
Name ten things that remind you of the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s:
Disco balls, ghetto blasters, platform shoes, big sunglasses, massive hair, vinyl, flares, Big M, neon lights, roller skates.
Tell us a little about your background and what has influenced you both?
Both of us have loved disco from super early days when both our parents played everything from Boney M to Saturday Night Fever on record players at our homes.
When did you start producing, and any standout releases we may have missed?
I (Cassie) am a topline writer, I leave the production skills up to Andy. I started song writing about 15 years ago.
My favourite song I co-wrote would be “Vegas” which we wrote for Vandalism.
Is there an iconic quote that sums you up?
Andy Van: Love music, love life
Cassie Van: “Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she’ll conquer the world” – Marilyn Monroe.
Name a guilty pleasure in your record box?
Mmm….so many great classic tracks….. I love Anyway by Duck Sauce.
Do you still have a cassette collection or gaming console, tell us more?
I love everything 70s & 80s. I have a Dynasty Dynasty Discolite Ghetto Blaster (the one from Madonna’s Hung Up video). I also have Sony walkmans, classic Roland synths and a modded 909 drum machine. I’m a nutter for everything in that era.
Australian made or imported products, what’s your position on this?
Both, there’s a place for everything.
Andy, you started Vicious with your good friend John Course way back in 92, share some ups and downs for the label, and your favourite releases to date?
That’s a monster answer Vicious turns 30 next year,, so we will have a full promo campaign launching at the end of year and a truckload of fantastic stories to share.
Share some classic disco tracks you wish you could remake, or collaborate on:
Anything from Nile Rodgers, Stardust – Music Sounds Better.
Pick a legendary vocalist (alive or dead) that you wish you could work with and why?
Maurice White – Earth, Wind & Fire
If you were a car what would you be?
Andy Van: Lamborghini Countach
Cassie Van: Porsche 911
Your label consistently peaks at the top of international charts, what are your own goals for 2021?
We are pushing even harder to get our label presence on a global scale. This, includes a lot of remixes from top DJs andproducers such as Mousse T, Patrick Topping, Harry Romero, The Cube Guys and Birdee to name a few
Any crazy or excessive clubbing stories you’d like to share?
We once did a gig in Texas that the crowd was so into, no one was going to the bar to order drinks as they didnt want to leave the dance floor. The promoter kicked us off because he wasn’t making any money from the bar!
Cassie we’d love you to name a retro item you wish you still owned, and what sparks from that memory?
I’ve been wanting a retro record player for a while. They remind me of sitting on the floor at Mum and Dad’s house listening to all my Mum’s 70s vinyl.
In your eyes what’s the worst record ever made?
Mmm maybe best not to answer that, but I don’t really dig heavy metal.
Which one’s the most stylish in the act?
We both love fashion. Another thing we have in common.
Creativity starts where? Elaborate…
Thats hard one, but I’ve got to say a lot of my creativity comes when I’m DJing and seeing crowds go off to a certain track. Inspired, I think to myself, I’ve got to create something in this area.
Any projects or collaborations you’ve been involved in that we already aren’t aware of?
Andy was part of the group Madison Avenue.
What makes a great record in your experience?
Great vocal or melodic hooks, something that sticks in your head.
What’s your favourite piece of equipment in the DJ booth or studio?
Macbook Pro laptop, easy
So Andy, you’ve remained at the top of your game DJing weekly for decades, how is the scene different from the beginning?
Clubs are almost exactly the same, clubbers going off to good music, itnever really changes.ow social media has really become super important to everyone. I see more people uploading to Instagram stories, Snapchat or similar social platforms rather than really enjoying the moment on the dancefloor.
Question as a duo, if you could represent any fashion brand what would it be, and why?
In the past it would have been Jean Paul Gaultier as he’s so freakin’ creative.
Now, it would be Moschino as they have some pretty wild ideas.
A serious word of advice for new artists wanting to break through…. go!
Find something you love making, look up Youtube videos on how to make dance music, and then get your demos out there.
Name your favourite item of clothing? What does this say about your character?
Andy Van: I recently got a wicked disco jacket, and have worn it way too many times.
Cassie Van: All my stage costumes as I’m known to love a sequin and they represent fun and escapism for me.
What’s your idea of chilling out?
Yoga, listening to music, movies and the beach.
What challenges have you both faced balancing performance and studio pressures with personal life?
It’s a lot of juggling. It’s definitely even more of a crazy juggle with kids involved now. We have to plan our days out so that we keep very organised.
How do you remain fit and healthy within the entertainment industry, notorious for late nights and cocktails?
We are both actually really healthy and try to balance it all out with as much sleep, vitamins and exercise as we can get. Andy has never been a drinker but Cassie likes a few.
Tell us your favourite restaurant and signature dish in your hometown.
Nobu their miso cod and crispy rice with spicy tuna. Yum!
Classics, bootlegs, edits or cutting edge original tracks, Which work best in a tough dancefloor situation?
Actually updated versions of classic tracks works best for me, escape maybe for a couple of big Daft Punk tunes, which seems to remain timeless
Do you have any fun facts, or secrets about the act you’d like to share?
Andy started his first record label and produced the Madison Avenue record renting a small $5 a week garage.
Cassie was a dancer for Peter Andre.
You’ve worked with many top end names, what was the most inspiring experience?
There has been quite a lot. I really enjoyed working with Static Revenger in LA, he’s such a talented & vibey guy. Another is Sgt Slick, he’s a really software geek & has great techniques on how to make good disco music
What’s made you laugh the most this year?
All the crazy memes on social media. They kept us laughing through a very tough lockdown.
Is there anyone else musical or creative in your family?
My cousin is DJ Marcel from Amsterdam, he was a very important DJ & promoter in the 90s in the Amsterdam Club Scene.
Almost 30 years of Vicious Recordings… what would another 30 look like in an ideal world?
Hopefully more success, and happy young artists making great music
Do you both have any nicknames that your friends call you?
Cassie- I have many, Sass, Cassie Cass, Trashy, Honey Bunny and Casper.
Andy – Van Man, Mr Van, nothing too exciting I’m afraid
