Timmy Trumpet

Two of the world’s most renowned dance artists Timmy Trumpet and Afrojack have joined forces for an incredible new single: ‘Stay Mine’. It’s a team up that resulted in something quite remarkable; a melancholic yet powerful record featuring cool pulsating bass chords, nicely rolling house rhythms, subtle drops and invigorating vocals. DMCWORLD checks in with the superstar Timmy Trumpet as he smashes it yet again…

Hey Timmy, a huge welcome to DMCWORLD, where on this lunatic planet are you today?

Sydney, Australia!

What is the best piece of new music you have heard recently?

Drivers License – Olivia Rodrigo

Really exciting times for you at the moment thanks to your new Afrojack collab ‘Stay Mine’. How did this collab happen, who’s masterplan was it?

I’ve always wanted to work with Afrojack. I’ve been a big fan of his music for years and we’ve caught up backstage and on tour a few times but this year we finally got to get together online and make the track happen.

Please talk us through the sound and story of the track…

It’s just a fun track with a super catchy melody. I think we came together with both of our styles and you can see our influences in the final product. I knew it would end up being a fun track as we always have crazy fun together.

Congratulations on the release of your album ‘Mad World’, what has the experience been like for you?

Really amazing! Releasing an artist album has been a dream of mine for years. It’s just been hard to find the time to really make it happen the way I wanted to do it. With touring coming to a halt over the past year, that allowed the tracks to finally come together. The hardest part was choosing the songs that would end up being on the album after spending the best part of five years on it. I had to cut down over 100 tracks to get the album you hear today.

So gotta touch on the subject that has dominated the world; how has the past year been for you, how have you been spending your time and what have you learnt about yourself and the world we live in?

I’m healthy, my friends are healthy, my family are healthy, we are very blessed. I’ve learned a lot about myself and a lot about others, I think we all have. I can’t wait to get back on tour and take some of the lessons of the past year and apply it to my life moving forward. I’ve never really taken this industry and the job I have for granted but I now have an even greater appreciation for connecting with people and all the places that I’m privileged enough to visit.

3 big tunes in your box this weekend, please give us a sentence on each…

Drivers License – I just made a mashup of it!

I’m playing a DMX record this weekend out of respect for a fkn legend!

Kid Laroi – Without You. This guys is crushing it and from my home city.

Okay let’s get personal for a moment…

Favourite film of all time?

Happy Gilmore

Childhood celebrity crush?

Catherine Zeta Jones

Your most cherished album?

Rage Against The Machine – the self-titled album.

The last time you cried?

Watching the music video for Drivers License. Speechless.

A tune you wish you’d have made?

Mad World. I remade it for this reason.

Your earliest memory of music as a child?

My Dad playing guitar to me.

Was music the only career choice for you or was there another life path you could have taken?

I’ve been playing music all my life and professionally from when I was still in high school. I haven’t really thought too much about what else I would be doing but it would definitely be something in the creative arts.

What was your first break into the music industry?

I was chosen to support Stevie Wonder in Australia when I was still in high school. That was the first big break I got that really motivated me to become a performer. My first big break in dance music was playing trumpet alongside other artists and DJs. That was my way in, and everything went on from there. A few years later and my track ‘Freaks’ blew up and things were never the same again.

Who were the guys you were looking up to in the early days?

Daft Punk, Armin Van Buren, Tiësto and Afrojack! Nick was a superstar making tracks with Pitbull when I was still playing tiny bars around my hometown.

3 things you are looking forward to in 2021…

Everyone safely getting a vaccine! The return of festivals, and the music I have coming out. I have releases coming out with some of my idols that I can’t wait to play everyone…
