Amine Edge & DANCE

The dudes from the south of France kicking the shit out of it

Interview by Dan Prince

Hey guys, welcome to DMCWORLD. How was the opening of Sankeys in Ibiza last week – what did you think of the new sound system?

We played in the Lab and they added a massive Pioneer sound system as big as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, so we were expecting an amazing sound system. Frequency talking, it was perfect, but the volume was too low at points because we could have a conversation in front of the speakers, but it sounded good in the DJ booth. There were lots of fans from last year there too so it was like coming back to school after the summer vacation – so sick!

Tell us about your plans to not only record and upload every single of your DJ sets, you are now we hear gonna record them in video?

So basically after a long discussion with Sirus Hood who records all his set on video via his GoPro, we decided to do it like him too, recording all our sets on video. The decision to upload all of them is another thing though. When you upload a live set, you can listen and imagine the party was sick, but if a party is shit (it can happen) the video will look shit too! It’s interesting because it must almost like watching a horse eating grass for two hours, so we think we’ll only upload the most videos of our sets from the most crowded parties.

What was the idea moving on from Thursdays to Mondays?

Because we have so many gigs in the USA right now, we were obliged to stick with our North American summer tour and move it to Mondays. Mondays are a big challenge of course, but we think that CUFF proposes an alternative in terms of music to the rest of the island parties and as we always do, we will work hard to make this second year a successful one.

Who are the new artists you cannot wait to see down at CUFF this summer in Ibiza?

We have some new killers for you this summer! Sammy W & Alex E, Medeew & Chicks Luv Us, Maximono, Tekla and loads more.

Can you remember the first time you came to Ibiza. Your initial thoughts, the clubs and DJ you checked out?

Amine Edge: It was in 2006 and it was a dream come true to be in Ibiza as a clubber. I saw Tiefschwaz at Space, Hernan Cattaneo at Pacha for Renaissance and Lemon8 at Amnesia. It was so sick, I really loved the progressive vibe back then.

DANCE : It was three years ago. I went to DC10 and Brawther was playing an incredible tech-house set. You know I never usually dance but that day I was on the dancefloor for like three hours non-stop! Kery Chandler was playing after him and he was great too – the vibe was amazing.

Restaurants and beaches you love on the white isle…

Amine Edge: I don’t know many places to eat in Ibiza because last year I had a villa there with my squad and we cooked most of the time – Max is a fucking chef! I love to go Mambo though because I like the mood and food there – it’s all about nice beaches and quiet places, so hopefully I will find some more soon.

DANCE : There is a very nice restaurant called ‘Es Raco’ near the airport and you can eat outside on the terrace, which feels great. You can order anything too and know it will be good – I remember they do a salad with goat cheese and strawberries which was delicious.

What are the release plans over the coming months?

Maximono’s EP is coming this June with a sick video and there’s also a Tekla EP. We’re working with Medeew & Chicks Luv US too and on an amazing song by another friend from the South of France called Aztec – we work as a family!

What can you tell us about your international residencies this summer…

Every one is positive. Sometimes they are sick, sometimes not but we keep working hard and try to make the brand bigger and bigger all the time. If fans want more, we will give them more.

How would you describe the soundtrack to Mondays at Sankeys?

We play house music and all the sub-genres around it.

Early musical influences growing up?

Amine Edge: House music of course but also Armand van Helden, Todd Terry, Masters at Work etc..

DANCE : I grew up listening to American hip hop & RnB so Notorious B.I.G., R.Kelly, Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest etc.

And finally, what 1 record always reminds you of Ibiza?

Amine Edge: It’s really hard to say because I hate to play a track too many times. That’s my biggest
problem actually – after playing a track 5 to 10 times, I can’t hear it anymore. I will say ‘Special’ makes me remember Ibiza the most.

DANCE : Travi$ Scott – ‘Mamacita’ only because I used to drive a car around Ibiza and I always listened to this song really loud in it before going to clubs.
