‘Leaving You’ – dancefloor chaos live and direct from the shores of Connecticut

Welcome to DMCWORLD Nate. You have the world rocking with your latest tune ‘Leaving You’ featuring Michael S. The track is a different sound from you of sorts, last year saw a more poppy sound of prog-house with the feel good ‘These Are The Days’ – how do you think your studio sound has developed over the last twelve months…?

“I just always try new stuff! I get bored with sounds very quickly so I have to always try new styles, however I always try to keep the same vibe and personality in the tracks.”

In a country where EDM has absolutely exploded, it is so refreshing to discover a dance music star who hails from such a small place – Mystic in Connecticut…a small village known for it’s fishing and port. So let’s go back to your teens…how on earth did a kid develop a love for club music when you were rolling in such deep countryside?

“With so little to do around here, club music was so different and interesting for me! It’s really not a big thing over here so it was also cool to be into something a little bit out of the ordinary. I have always had a passion for it even as a child, it just took me a while to realize that it was electronic music that I liked the most.”

Your emergence as an artist is a testament to aspiring producers all around the world – quality always wins the day however long it takes. At the age of 17 whilst your friends were preparing college applications or looking at teen jobs, you were starting to send out your music to producers and labels. Tell us about the Flashover Recordings call and how ‘Rise & Shine’ came to our dancefloors…

“That was a pleasant surprise! I really wanted to sign some of my music, and when Flashover took Rise And Shine, I was ecstatic! It was something fun I decided to pursue that became something career-like in very little time.”

Miami WMC is around the corner. Some big gigs coming up for you. What are you looking forward to the most about dance music’s craziest fortnight?

“WMC is going to be so fun! I hear the vibe is untouchable. The gigs are going to be a lot of fun, I just know it. I’m really looking forward to my first WMC!”

Now that the dust has settled after a quite simply stupendous 12 months for EDM in America, how do you think this sound and clublife is doing in your home country?

“It’s just constantly growing! More and more people are discovering dance music every day, and it’s becoming the biggest (if not already) music genre in the states currently!”

You are making your European debut on Saturday June 29th at Summerfestival in Antwerp alongside Hardwell, Martin Solveig and John Dahlback – what took you so long?!?!?

“The timing is perfect! I think this is a perfect debut, a great big festival with a bunch of awesome artists. I truly cannot wait for this!”

Most of dance music’s biggest stars have a big reason why they chose their pseudonym for their artist career. The Swedes chose their name because they were the dons, Felix Da Housecatt plumped for his name because he was the coolest DJ in America and David Guetta opted for that moniker because, er, well that’s what his parents named him. Your artist name however has a slightly quirky story behind it…

“It’s really simple actually, it just stuck one day and now it’s my full on alias.”

Your live shows have been going down a storm – I was down the front at LIV in Miami and Pacha in New York. Where are the big summer festival dates we will find you this summer?

“Tons of Europe stuff lined up festival wise. Really looking forward to that. I know I’ll still be stateside in the summer as well, so it will be a widespread tour!”

So we come back to the Audien crib. What do you play us to carry on the party…

“Tons of my own tracks, but also a lot from labels such as Anjunabeats, Armada, Axtone, etc!”

We know you love Armin, what was that first experience like when you shared a stage with the world’s No. 1 DJ?

“It was amazing! He’s such a nice guy too.”

Not many people know this, but Nate Rathbun is really good at…

“Buying things and selling them a month later! .. lol.”

Favourite three records of all time…

Orbital – Halcyon (Tom Middleton Remix)

Pink Floyd – Speak To Me

Axwell – Nothing But Love (Axwell Remode)

Who are the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to at the moment?

“Axwell, Knife Party, BT, Arty, Above & Beyond, Andrew Bayer, Seven Lions, many more!”

What was the last really great club you rocked?

“Ruby Skye.”

What is the best piece of advice you can give to the thousands of aspiring producers reading this wanting to follow in your footsteps…?

“Just create what you like, and take inspiration from everywhere and not just one place!”

And finally Nate. What is the dream for 2013?

“Being able to keep doing what I love!”
