Back to Mine With Berzingue

After years of thrilling Parisian clubs as half of the ALVA duo, Virage Records co-founder Berzingue continues his solo work with another superb EP. ‘Road Trip’ is his third outing for Point Neuf Records and is a captivating musical journey that pays homage to the annual road trips Berzingue takes with his wife across. DMCWorld goes Back To Mine with Berzingue.

Linkwood Family – Miles Away

Shoutout to my friend Louis for introducing me to this tune 10 years ago while we were in architecture school. He had one of the best deep house playlist that we were listening to on repeat while working on our models and drawings late at night. I will never ever get bored of this track.

Ravel – Boléro

I grew up listening to jazz and classical music. I’m a big fan of Ravel, Satie and Debussy, because their compositions are so simple yet emotionally powerful. I could have chosen “Clair de Lune” from Debussy or one of Satie’s “Gnossiennes”, but it is an occasion to highlight the fact that Bolero is essentially one motif with variations in orchestration, notes and spacing; it’s a big inspiration for me when producing electronic music.

Herbie Hancock – Chameleon

What a fucking trip, herbie’s genius in one track. My parents were big jazz enthusiasts so they brought me to amazing concerts. I had the privilege to see Herbie Hancock with Wayne Shorter and Marcus Miller at the Jazz à Juan festival, it was beyond expectations.

Congress – Neptune

I’m a huge fan of all kinds of jazz/funk, I could have selected 100’s of tracks but this one encapsulates all that I love about jazz/funk – lush chords, a groovy bass-line and crispy drums.

San Soda – Doorsnee

San Soda is one of my favorite producers of all-time, with outstanding releases on ‘We Play House’. ‘Doorsnee’ is an underrated gem; if you like anything deep and hypnotic, give it a listen.

Pepe Bradock – Deep Burnt

Deep house at its finest, with the iconic use of Freddie Hubard’s ‘Little Sunflower’ sample. All of Pepe’s productions are worth a listen (‘Life’, ’18 Carats’, ‘Vermeille’ etc.) but ‘Deep Burnt’ is a timeless manifesto. Kolter (formerly known as Djoko) did an interesting break remix one year ago for those interested.

Lemon8 – Triple Funk

“Legendary progressive”. It was hard choosing between this and others like Technasia’s Resilience, the point is that these are tracks that blur the boundaries between techno, progressive and house. I have awesome memories of playing “Triple Funk”, especially when we were closing Batofar with Calmos. The boat was swaying because everyone was jumping inside, it was insanely fun.

Mr Scruff – Jazz Potato

This tune just feels cozy, I’ve been coming back to it for the last 15 years. Below some comments found on the video that I 100% agree with. “The best snare drum i’ve heard in my life!” “That’s the beauty of jazz. Always new, always fresh and always drummy.” “Awesome work! Jazz with hip-hop beats, Lounge feel and techno riffs!”

Sade – Nothing Can Come Between Us

How can anyone not love Sade?? While ‘Smooth Operator’ is an iconic hit, I have kept the ‘Stronger than pride album’ CD in my car for the last 10 years and I’m still not bored of it. ‘Nothing Can Come Between Us’ is my favorite, but ‘Keep Looking’ and ‘Never Thought I’d See The Day’ are top-notch too.

Pink Floyd – Echoes

I played the guitar a lot when I was in high-school, and Pink Floyd was my favorite band. I’ve listened to all their albums many times, especially ‘Meddle’, ‘Animals’ and ‘The Wall’. ‘Echoes’ is one of the most comprehensive pieces of music I can think of, and it is a mental trip of its own. The funky part from 7:05 is just so well thought and crafted. ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘Atom Heart Mother’ should also be mentioned, as they are equally long and have that symphonic aspect with various movements.
