Lady – Money (Terri Walker & Lady Wray)
I’ve loved both of these ladies’ solo work over the years, so when they joined forces to create Lady, I was over the moon. The old-school rhythm and their soulful vocals just fit perfectly. I still find myself dancing and singing along every time it plays. A few years back, I was lucky enough to open for them and Lee Fields at Islington Assembly Hall seeing them live was unforgettable.
Lucky Daye ft. Yebba – How Much Can a Heart Take
I love the musical synergy between these two. The groove, Yebba’s vocals in general, is just absolutely captivating. I usually listen to them separately, but together, they’re magic.
Starvue – Body Fusion
This takes me back to weekends at home with my parents, house parties, cleaning playlists, just pure vibes. It’s a classic that never fails to transport me to those happy memories.
Jazmine Sullivan – Lost One
Jazmine is one of my favourite artists and vocally one of the best. She brings out real emotion every time. This song, dedicated to her late mother, is especially meaningful to me, as I lost my father in 2020. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful.
Durand Bernarr – Stuck ft. Ari Lennox
Durand is a vocal phenomenon. His range and creativity blow me away every time. I’ve had this track on repeat for years, the chemistry with Ari Lennox on this one is just perfection.
Rick James – Fire & Desire ft. Teena Marie
A staple in my home growing up my dad loved Rick James and often channelled his energy! This song is pure passion: powerhouse vocals, emotion, and groove. Music with essence.
Lenny Williams – ‘Cause I Love You
I first heard this when Steve Harvey played it during The Kings of Comedy. I had to hear the full song and it didn’t disappoint. It’s raw, emotional, and powerful. Twista’s “Overnight Celebrity” later sampled it, but the original still hits the hardest.
Omar Lye-Fook – There’s Nothing Like This
This is the soundtrack to my childhood. A UK soul classic for weddings, christenings, funerals, family parties. It’s always played. From that first bassline, you know what time it is.
Aretha Franklin – Love Me Right
Produced by Luther Vandross, sung by the Queen herself. Funky, playful, and full of soul. It reminds me of watching House Party with my brother Marlon that golden era of soundtracks and pure nostalgia.
Chromonicci – SunLove
A friend introduced me to Chromonicci, and his ‘Fold the Light’ project blew me away, no skips! “SunLove.” especially resonated with me at a personal time. The instrumentation and warmth of it just feed my creativity.
Dan The Drum, Carmy Love ‘Hurt So Bad’ (Original ‘SHLJ’ Versions) is out now on F*CLR.
