Back To Mine With Jon Dixon

Jon Dixon brings a jazz sensibility to his techno. He is an Underground Resistance affiliate who has released music on cult labels like Planet E and is one of Detroit’s most sought-after musicians, having performed with greats such as Amp Fiddler, Jeff Mills, Mike Banks, and Derrick May. His hi-tech sound is informed by time spent working with the late jazz icon Marcus Belgrave and comes on his own 4evr 4wrd as well as the likes of Nervous. As he lands on the No Speakers label with his brilliant ‘Paradise Valley’ EP, DMCWorld goes Back To Mine with Jon Dixon.

Lyle Mays – Black Ice

Lyle has had the biggest impact on me as a musician and music therapist! I’ve learned so much about improvisation and patience through this song. Easily one of my favourite pieces of music.

Pat Metheny Group – Part Two (The Way Up Album)

An entire 16 week course can be taught on this album! From composition, reoccurring motifs, melody, harmony, rhythm, etc. This is one of the most genius pieces of music I’ve ever heard.

The Way Up: Part Two

Carl Craig – Science Fiction

If you’ve ever been to Detroit before 1997, then you should be able to imagine riding through the city and having this as the soundtrack. This song to me brings back those memories of the “Old Detroit” that not a lot of people will ever get to experience.

Jon Dixon – O Inicio

Portuguese for “The Beginning”. I named this song for my soon to be born son in 2018. It was the first time I experienced so much excitement to become a father. I was also in a car accident earlier that year which gave me a new perspective on life and to enjoy all new beginnings.

Digable Planets – Rebirth of Slick

My dad had an incredible record and CD collection. Obviously we had this one on repeat in the 1995 Dodge Chrysler for all our family road trips.

Pat Matheny – Something to Remind You

My kids who are 7 and 5 have incredible ears! They will begin singing the extended melody to this song out of nowhere, but in the correct key and with all the key changes. It blows my mind how well they hear, especially to a piece of music that comes from an amazing album.

Something to Remind You

Nat King Cole – Pick Yourself Up

For any Breaking Bad Fans, you may recognize this one. When I was watching the series, I had to rewind this scene about 5 times because the music was so captivating. It’s incredible being thrown off guard from what’s in front of you all because of a good piece of music.

Gustav Holst-Neptune

The beauty that lies in the entire Planets Suite, but in this piece in particular is amazing. I love listening to a piece of music and being able to visualize images in my head. Holst is one of my favorite classical composers. His story telling in this suite is incredible.

Teddy Pendergrass – Love T.K.O.

This is a classic from my childhood. I’m instantly taken back to the 1980s and being in my parent’s house. To also hear live musicians playing on a track with no machines…..priceless. And what a master vocalist Teddy was!

Pat Metheny Group – To The End of The World

This was the very first song that allowed me to feel emotions and see pictures in my mind. This song introduced me to knowing that music has more power than just sounding good. Good music can make you feel “some type of way” as they say.
