Back To Mine With Kristin Velvet

Berlin-based Australian artist Kristin Velvet has lived, promoted, partied, DJed and produced around the world. These days, Kristin is shaping the Berlin scene with her work at Arms & Legs Records and as resident DJ at Watergate. She brings an interesting array of influences to her music which is rooted in heavy house and techno grooves with smart hooks. Last year she contributed a tune to the Watergate Twenty Years Anniversary Compilation. As her new single, ‘Slater Hills’ drops on Josh Winks’ Ovum Recordings, DMCWorld goes back to mine with Kristin Velvet.

The KLF – Chill Out

The album name says it all really. In their own words this is ‘ambient house… music that grew out of spending 12 hours at a rave, dancing nonstop all night, and then needing something to ease back into the reality of Sunday morning’. Drummond and Cauty… legends!

KLF - Chill Out - Album - 1990

Metro Area – Metro Area

An absolute masterpiece of timeless perfection, for me this is the ultimate ‘back to mine’ album.

Metro Area - Miura

Speedy J – G Spot

The first time I heard this album was at an afterparty following a fairly long session at Panorama Bar, upon hearing ‘Fill 17’ tears starting streaming down my face, the music pulled on all of my heart strings! I was so moved and played the album on repeat non stop for weeks.

John Beltran – Earth and Nightfall

I’m a huge John Beltran fan… John the don. He has many great albums but this one is my favorite.

John Beltran - Earth & Nightfall (1995, Ambient/Detroit Techno, FULL ALBUM)

Thievery Corporation – The Mirror Conspiracy

Wonderfully chill.

Thievery Corporation - A Guide for I & I [Official Audio]

Bugge Wesseltoft – New Conceptions of Jazz: Sharing

Warm, emotive future jazz.

Bugge Wesseltoft - Existence

Stan Getz – Stan Getz Quartets

I love a lot of the early Prestige Records discography, it was a fantastic New York jazz label founded by Bob Weinstock in the late 1940s which encouraged improvisation. Any of the recordings featuring saxophonist Stan Getz are brilliant.

The Cinematic Orchestra – All that you Give (feat. Fontella Bass)

I will never forget hearing them play this live at Sydney Festival, I arrived late with my partner at the time and the only two seats left were smack bang in the middle of the front row. When the bass came in it hit my right in the heart, so beautiful. Comes with a great Matthew Herbert remix too.

Outcast – Vibrate

A low slung reminder to vibrate higher. It’s very hypnotic with the drums in reverse and Andre 3000s comforting voice.

Various Artists – Tribes vol. 6 Soul Searching

A wonderful downtempo album compiled by Soulpatrol featuring Ultra Nate, Maurice Fulton amongst others. For me the highlight comes at the end from Soulpatrol himself with Love Variations Pt. 1

Kristin Velvet ‘Slater Hills’ will be released on February 17th 2023 on Ovum Recordings.
