Carl Cox

The master of the musical revolution live from Ibiza

Interview by Dan Prince

Welcome back to DMCWORLD young man. Gotta kick off with that Spicks and Specks TV show that is once again doing the rounds on social media from a few years back. It never goes away huh?

Haha, that’s the beauty of the internet! Yeah it was a few years ago down in Australia where I have a house in Frankston, a suburb of Melbourne. The place is considered a bit bogus, it has a real stigma from the 1970s for being a bit weird. So when this TV company found out that suddenly this international DJ was living there and then discovered I used to be a professional dancer, well they just had to get me on the show. And sure enough half way through filming, the presenter Adam Hills who is now a huge name in the UK, asked me to get up and “show Australia your moves”. I thought to myself, ‘fucking hell Carl, you’ve not done this in a while son’. But I did it and the crowd went crazy, job done.”

And the crowd go crazy, nothing new there then. So, Music Is Revolution at Space, what an amazing summer in Ibiza dude?

Dan it’s been phenomenal this year. Listen, we have put on a great night every week for over a decade ensuring amazing line ups with value for money entrance charges…but this summer has been unbelievable. We are getting clubbers in from all over the world and let’s be honest, Tuesdays is the strongest night on the island. Together & Defected at Amnesia, Flower Power at Pacha, Sankeys, Oakenfold at Vista…there is so much choice. The last three weeks we have had to close the doors because the club was full. The response we have had this year is amazing. And what makes me proud is that we haven’t had to respond to other nights, we still book new talent, always try and book as many female DJs as possible and of course the premier guys are always on the line ups.

You also encourage a sense of ‘freeness’ at Music Is Revolution?

Yes we do, that’s what our night is all about. You can dress how you want and within reason, do what you want. As soon as you walk through those famous Space doors the venue and night is yours…that’s what you want from a club isn’t it?

I’ve heard the night has set some sort of record with the ‘CLUB FULL’ sign going up these past few weeks?

Apparently we were only a handful of people away from breaking a record that had stood for over 20 years. Three weeks in a row we put the CLUB FULL sign up and we were so close the following week!

I was in the house last week for Eats Everything, he is on quite a roll isn’t he?

He is such a prolific DJ, one of the young guns who will 100% stand the test of time. You know, we have people flying in from far flung places from around the world to come to the club and even though they may not have heard of him before the night, by the end of his sets everyone in the club knows who the hell he is. His set is a real melting pot of music, he drops all sorts and isn’t afraid of taking a risk. And you know what? Boy can you tell he is having a good time, he never stops moving. That for me is the best feeling for a DJ, when you are locked in the groove knowing you are making a lot of people very happy out on the dancefloor. It gives me great satisfaction at the end of a set knowing I have caused delirium out there.”

It was your party a few weeks back, I was driving past Space and saw a huge crate of Jeroboam champagne being delivered, I assumed it was for you. Did you neck it all?

Ha ha there’s a great story behind that. On my 50th a few years ago I was given one of those by some friends and it was sitting there in the booth all night. The guys from Dusseldorf who put on the Hyte night were in the house and were eying it up. My manager Lynn Cosgrove was standing there and she said to them ‘you open it, I’ll kill you. It will take 100 people to drink that, you’re not wasting it’. So they opened it, drank a few glasses, saw the error of their ways and scarpered. And that was the replacement bottle you saw being delivered as means of apology. God knows when I’ll open it.”
