David Solano

One of America’s most exciting new EDM producer’s live and direct from Miami

Welcome to DMCWORLD young man. You were born in Bogota in Colombia and now reside in Miami, what’s the story there..?

“I moved from Colombia to Miami when I was 14 years old. Unfortunately things where pretty violent in Bogota back then, so my family chose to come here to create a better life for us.”

How did you get into EDM back in the day, what were the DJs and events that first enticed you into this wicked little scene?

“I was always obsessed with music. I had a band when I was 11 years old where I was the composer and guitar player. I had the opportunity see Tiesto’s huge concerts and live performances with other musicians. This made me realize what EDM really was; a musical mixture of all genres controlled by one architect “the DJ” and I was sold!”

Can you remember your first ever DJ set and how much you got paid?

“Yes, it was in Tallahassee, FL where I attended the University. It was a huge house party! Kegs, crazy hot girls…your typical college get down . I didn’t get paid a dime, but the girl I hooked up with that night definitely made it all worth it. Hahaha…!!

What was the record that changed your life?

“Dirty South vs Evermore – ‘It’s Too late’, this is why I got into house music.”

You have just signed to Faux Entertainment, a massive move for both parties – what prompted that decision and what are the plans…

“I felt like it was time to switch gears in my career, and they seem to be a great fit! I’m really excited about this! We have so many creative plans in the works, but if I could sum it up I’d say…a huge focus on music, releases and marketing”

What is coming next from you studio wise, we hear there are some big tunes coming our way…

“Yes, I have a couple massive remixes coming out before the end of this year. One is for Robbie Rivera’s Juicy Music label and the other one is for Ultra Records. I also have some great originals I have been working on, one being a massive collaboration with DJ R3hab, which will be the “Life in Color” anthem”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

1. All We Are – Robbie Rivera feat Blake Lewis (David Solano remix)

2. Bad Habits – (David Solano & leewise remix)

3. City of Dreams – Dirty South & Alesso

4. Fire – Adrian Lux feat Lune (Mikael Weermets Fire In The Hole Remix)

5. Once Upon A Time – Carl Kennedy feat. Cheyenne (Tony Romera Remix)

6. Take Me To The DJ – David Solano, Tony Puccio, Karim (Dero & Robbie Rivera Moocher Mix)

7. The Veldt – Deadmau5 feat Chris James (Tommy Trash Remix)

8. Go (Original Mix) Tonite only

9. Reload – Sebastian Ingrosso & Tommy trash

10. Mercy – Kanye West (David Solano’s Trap Edit)

What has been your anthem of the summer?

“‘Mercy’ – Kanye West (David Solano Trap Edit).”

You are part of the team behind ‘Life In Color’, the world’s largest paint party formerly known as Dayglow – a business that your brother Sebastian created. Describe what actually happens at one of these events for us Europeans who haven’t made it to this crazy party…

“Life in Color actually has started reaching Europe. There were two great events in Poland, the homeland of the other two co-creators of this event. As for what happens at one of these events; it’s a huge production and to sum it up; picture Cirque du Soleil, the Blue Man Group and a massive EDM concert meets a massive Paint Party. You really have to see it for yourself!”

How does a DJ approach a set at Life In Color as opposed to a set at Mansion for instance? How do you have to adapt your playlist?

“Well a DJ set at Life in Color is very similar to a festival set, quick transitions, a lot of vocals, and the crowd loves the hard stuff! I adapt to my playlist based on the cities I’m in. Some crowds are more educated than others. For instance, Miami, you have to play the newer stuff.”

What is the craziest thing you have ever seen at one of these parties?

“I’ve seen a lot of crazy things, but one that jumps out at me is when I played with Bunny from “Rabbit in the Moon”. In the middle of his set he went to the middle of the stage and drank a full bottle of paint!! I couldn’t believe it haha!!! Love that guy!”

The EDM scene in the States is getting a lot of flack from some of the ‘serious music’ spinners this side of the pond. A lot of them claim that the American crowd are turning DJs into jukeboxes over there as all they want is hit after hit. Thoughts on that?

“This is partially true, but it’s also the DJs job to keep things interesting. For example, play big records but give it a twist by switching the vocal or instrumental, this drives the crowd crazy and keeps your DJ set fresh.”

Some are also saying that EDM is going to be like Disco was in the 70s, when the American youth have had enough they will simply chuck it in the trash can and move onto the next sound. Discuss…

“I definitely disagree! EDM is rock, 80’s, pop, blues, Disco etc. All of these combined. EDM has proved to be the true mixture of all genres. This is a prime reason I feel EDM will always be the dominating genre in the world. There’s no limitations to what musicians can do. It’s creativity to the fullest. People are using live instruments to perform and live musicians of all different styles to produce. It will just modify its sounds as time goes by. This is how new genres come about, such as Trap and Moombah”

What has been the proudest moment of your career to date?

“There’s a few, but if I could pick one it would probably be when I played at EDC Orlando on the main stage last year. The crowd was massive and the support from my home state was overwhelming. I’ll never forget that show.”

Not many people know this, but David Solano is really good at?

“FIFA!!”

What is your perfect idea of a day off?

“Perfect day would be just hanging out with my close friends and doing something weird like cow tipping haha!”

What have been your favourite big events of summer 2012?

“I would say Life in Color New York. The crowd was massive! Bassjackers, Rr3hab and myself went crowd surfing during the last song! It was one for the books!”

If you hadn’t have become a producer, what do you think you would have ended up doing?

“A Pro Soccer player. It is definitely my second passion next to music.”

And finally, do you ever get confused with the American Sports journalist of the same name?

“LOL! No never knew there was one Dan!”
