Borgeous

One of the most exciting young producers in the electronic music world right now

Interview by Dan Prince

Dude welcome back to DMCWORLD. Where in the world are you right now?

I’m in the beautiful city of San Diego.

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning after rolling out of bed?

It was that new track by Years & Years ‘Shine’, it was just on the radio in a cab though.

So another monster tune from the Borgeous camp, this time round its in the form of ‘Lovestruckwith Mike Hawkins. Please talk us through the sound and history of the tune…

It was a lot of fun working together with Mike on this track. He’s really talented and while our sounds wouldn’t typically be like an obvious match, I think it worked out perfectly.

When was the last time you were lovestruck?

Haha, not sure if my love life is the greatest topic to talk about.

What are the 5 big tunes in your box this weekend, please give us a few words on each

– Dzeko & Torres – Lose Your Mind

Just a really great tune by these three guys.

– Jack Ü ft. Justin Bieber

Where Are Ü Now (Kaskade Remix); already a sick track on it’s own but this remix takes it up a notch.

– John Dahlbäck – Raven

Name says it all, rave!

– Ralvero – Supa Woofa

This dude’s been putting out some cool tracks, this one’s definitely cool too.

– Borgeous & Mike Hawkins – Lovestruck

Obviously need to put this one in here.

What has been your anthem of the summer?

I like to think that one of my tunes is the anthem of the summer, so I’ll just go for ‘Lovestruck’!

And the festival of the summer?

There’ve been so many, Escapade was a lot of fun and Electric Forest too. It’s so hard to choose though because I also played shows in Europe that were sick, like Tomorrowland.

The latest great studio toy you bought yourself?

Since I’m on the road so much, I don’t really have that much time to invest in a real studio at home. I did however get myself some top of the line headphones / laptop / production software to work with though.

You are in and out of Las Vegas all the time. What is the most rock & roll night you have ever had there?

I’m doing a residency at Marquee this year and it’s been so wild! The Vegas crowd is always so up for it. They’re usually on their bachelor party or something like that so it’s really a time to go crazy and not care at all and that shines through during my performances there. Vegas nights are always rock ’n roll I guess, there’s been some pretty cool celebrity encounters over there, I won’t specify further though haha.

How has the crowds musical knowledge improved over the last year or so, they used to dance to any old shit…?

I’m assuming you mean the Vegas crowd here, and they’ve kind of evolved. As I said earlier, these people tend to go wild and it’s not like they book a trip to Vegas to see a specific DJ perform there. They go there to sort of have that ‘The Hangover’ experience and that’s noticeable. However I must admit as to a while ago people would literally just dance and jump to anything, I feel like nowadays people are more informed as to who is playing and what that show/music will be like.

A young DJ/producer who has impressed you this year?

My recent collaborator, Mike Hawkins. He’s not really that new to the scene but he’s been putting out quality stuff.

The last tip top album you checked out?

It’s a shame that albums are much less common nowadays, how good was it to stand in line for that new album at the local record store? I just listened to Dillon Francis’ mixtape, which I know is practically not an album, but I love how he just does his own thing and collabs with Calvin Harris, Kygo and Skrillex.

What is the craziest thing a fan has ever done for you?

Well there’s crazy and there’s really crazy you know. I think it’s crazy when fans take the time to wait for me at the airport or outside of a club until I come out and start screaming and stuff, that’s already crazy to me! I appreciate it a lot and it’s great validation that I have awesome fans. However the really crazy fans have made me signs in which they propose to have my baby or whatever, I understand these are usually jokes but it’s still a little next level crazy to me haha.

Its a new question I love asking superstar DJs. When was the last time you played to a half empty dancefloor?

You know what, that’s a good question. I guess I’m lucky to say that it doesn’t happen that often anymore. But when I played Tomorrowland Brasil, I played quite an early slot and there was quite some space left on the dancefloor, but then again that mainstage holds like 50.000 people so if you play a half empty dancefloor you’re still playing an insane crowd.

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

I won’t be giving away too much because nothing is really definite yet. But you guys now that I love to produce, so there’s always new stuff in the works!
