Daisy Heartbreaker

From Mexico with love. The white isle producer who is simply a breath of fresh of air

Interview by DJ Paulette

Hi Daisy – thank you for taking time out to talk to DMC, petal. I have a fragrant bouquet of questions for you, so let’s get to it… When people ask me if Paulette is my real name I laugh because it’s not the sort of name you’d make up. So, tell us, is Daisy your real name and how did the name Daisy Heartbreaker come about?

Hahaha! Of course, Daisy Heartbreaker is an alter ego, a strong stage name. Sometimes people say that it is the super heroine’s name that nowadays is a role model for younger generations, back in my country and around other cities in Europe, youngsters who are keen on breaking into the music world. This name represents the highly creative & artistic side of the person I am. It came together after I thought about a name that could talk for itself, make a great impression and would be easy to remember forever. It was nice that I could make it up after experiencing a couple of months and clubs in what I can call a nice accident in the adventure of my life: IBIZA!

When did you make the move from Mexico to Ibiza and why?

I didn’t arrive straight from Mexico City. I left my country back in 2001, heading up the North of America to live in L.A. While working there as a backing vocal singer for ‘Vilma Palma e Vampiros’, a very successful pop-rock band from Argentina, the invitation to discover Ibiza was dropped to me. Without having a clue about this beautiful island and its natural environment, I would embark on a long- term adventure. I didn’t really know what to expect from the whole experience. I never thought that ‘this was about to change my artistic role in the music scene forever’. But over the course of my career, I would go from rock punk singer and trash metal band manager in my home town Mexico City to singer and model in L.A., Cal. to finale evolve into a DJ, promoter, self manager, artistic director of my parties’ concepts, producer and a TV-Radio broadcaster in the White Island. In April-May of 2002, my ‘space craft’ landed on the island. Wow. This year is my 13th anniversary living and DJing in Ibiza!

Have you ever broken anybody’s heart or has anybody ever broken your heart in real life?

Yes and yes…

Daisies are so called because they open their petals with the dawn each day : how important is being open to life’s experiences to you?

Being open to life’s experiences is very important to me, I have a degree in Science of Communications – specialising in music and arts journalism. I’m a great observer of the social situations anywhere I go, sometimes I’m like a chameleon ready to experience and adapt myself quickly to any unexpected new situations or new cultures.

How has this philosophy helped you to survive in Ibiza ?

It has helped me in a big way so I don’t get stressed out or very frustrated anymore…I can understand the very chilled and calmed down people’s attitude. The only time that I get a bit upset is when it comes to being professional at work. The rhythm of the local people, even if they come from other 1st world countries or big cities, sometimes is over relaxed, so everything goes tits up and it can get you absolutely crazy, especially when you have a deadline to achieve at work!

How would you describe your DJ / musical style?

Simply different! Pure ‘Power On’ – ‘High Voltage’, a mix between rocktronica and cosmo-punk sounds in harmony with the new direction that the electronic sounds are leading in the capital of dance music and around the planet earth…

Can Daisy Heartbreaker be pigeon-holed?

Yes by some narrow minded people. But Daisy Heartbreaker is always going beyond limits, she likes to conquer new challenges and she is always thinking forward, how to reinvent herself! This winter I’ve been working on the music project I have with my talented brother & music producer – Hector, “Da’RockaBuddha”.
Our duo/band is called “Los Deadlines” and this year we have a big commitment to finish our first LP…the music direction we are taking is pure ,’balearic-fucktronica’. We are very excited about what is coming next!!!

Would you ever play an EDM track in a Lo Cura Lounge set?

Probably, depending on the crowd’s age, if they are going crazy on the dancefloor or if the atmosphere of the room hosted by Lo Cura Lounge requires it!

You have been a resident at Lo Cura Lounge in El Salon – We Love at Space Ibiza and also Lo Cura Bar and now at Boutique Hostal Salinas for some years now. Tell us a little bit about those crazy parties and what’s with the swinging lampshades?

The whole LO CURA crew enjoys having wicked fun, we are friends before DJs with big egos, friends enjoying themselves behind the DJ booth letting their hair down and showing that each one has its own style! We like to see the crowd as our friends too. We just want the crowd to get inspired by our choice of music and let themselves go on the dance floor and if they want to join the craziness—swinging lamps, drinking ‘hierbas ibicencas’ or ‘tequila’ shots on us, why not?! It’s all about sharing some of the good love as back in time when the White Island wasn’t packed with trendy bars, five stars hotels and VIPS…It’s all about keeping the nice, kind and original spirit of Ibiza!

How important do you feel is the residents job to building the vibe of a party?

It is a big responsibility being the resident DJ of a club, a top venue or other brand with great worldwide reputation. Definitely, when the resident DJ has a packed room, her main job is to set the dance floor on fire, leaving the club ready with the crowd’s hands up in the air, welcoming the next DJ who takes over the booth!!!

Do you prefer to be a resident DJ or a headlining guest and why?

I like to play both roles! I’m passionate about music and being one of the pioneer female DJs of the first decade of the new millenium has been amazing, definitely being a headliner comes with extra benefits, and I love it when it comes that way…I’m ready to go around this world on a DJ tour to share the Ibiza’s sound experience, energy & love!

Did you know that daisies can be found everywhere on earth except Antartica?

Wow! I didn’t know that fact…I should head over there so I can make another exception…hehehe!

I know through your work and personal life you have travel extensively and internationally but is there anywhere in the world where you would love to play or visit?

I want to go back to my own roots, I haven’t be back to Mexico in 5 years. I’m dreaming about going on tour around North and South America. Playing in the Mayan Riviera, being on the BPM’s Festival lineup, representing not only Mexico’s female talent but also the Balearic sound I have been developing throughout the years I have been a resident DJ in Ibiza would be an absolute dream come true!

You are one person I know who can sincerely and honestly wear a Guns N Roses vest top, as I know that before you were a DJ you were singing and performing in the studio and on the road touring in rock bands. Tell us a little bit about this…

Wow! Yep…I grew up with some very quirky musical influences. Since I was a little girl, I loved listening to everything from blues, rock ‘n’ roll and punk to heavy metal and alternative rock bands. My favorite music scenes were on the West and East coast of North America. I was also fascinated by the UK’s rock, punk, indie, synth and Brit Pop scenes. I fronted for my first band, ‘Cold Feet’, when I was 14 years old. It was my brother, his friend and I. We were young, rebellious and want to make some noise (in a good way). From that moment, I was hooked. I started looking for other band projects, and I’ve been very lucky finding jobs as a singer with proper and well know bands or artists…One of them was HAR MAR SUPERSTAR — I toured the UK with him back in 2004…9It was one of those experiences you never forget!! Nowadays, as I mentioned before, I’m working with my brother on our 1st LP for our band, LOS DEADLINES. I’m singing again, playing a lead vocals/DJ role. I’m very excited!!!

How different is writing / singing and performing to DJing?

Wow! Different disciplines in music but all related activities and all demand loads of dedication and time—time for studying, time for practising, time for developing new material… music is like a high maintenance lover — she demands ALL your time!

Which would you rather do?

I can’t wait to go on stage LIVE with LOS DEADLINES in fusion with DJ hi-tech, involved in all the shows…

Does living and working in Ibiza make a difference to your DJ or live sound ?

YES!

What are your upcoming dates?

Ibiza Rocks House Opening – May 8th, LoCura Lounge at Boutique Hostal Salinas, ‘Once Upon A Time’ – fashion events, and more dates TBC throughout the summer.
Releases? LOS DEADLINES – LP soon!!!

And finally are you a hierbas, jagermeister or tequila girl?

Hmm…I think hierbas, to keep touch with my local ‘roots’, a tequilla shot as a tradition before starting a great DJ set, and Jagermeister in case I get locked inside the bar, DeMiedo overnight…again!!
