France in da house! World watch out…’Jubel’ is just the beginning

Interview : Dan Prince

Cédric welcome to DMCWORLD…where on planet dance are you today?

“Hey Dan, I’m at home in Lille, France. Just got back from Norway and Estonia and I leave on Thursday for Austria, Italy, Croatia, Sweden…”

Cranking up the air miles! Well, your huge single ‘Jubel’ has been tearing up Europe winning all sorts of awards…the tune is part of the great Ultra Deep House compilation, please talk us through the sound and history of the track which is now seeing the light of day around the world…

“Yes actually it was a big surprise for me. When I started this track it was more for fun you know. Of course I was already perfectionist in my music, but it was the perfect moment. I had the idea, my friend Lucie had the voice, we worked on this and put it on internet for our friends. Then you know what happened? In a few days blogs shared the track, I had management, labels, bookers contacting me…it was really quick and crazy at the beginning.”

Who was behind the award winning video?

“Actually it’s a Swedish based company behind the video called PIctionary Productions. The boss there Michael is a friend of my manager, so when we were thinking of the video they contacted him, we worked on a synopsis and they quickly catch the idea of the track and what I wanted in the video.”

You are in the middle of a huge summer of gigs; Tomorrowland, Wanderlust and Electric Love just some of the big shows coming up. What is your approach to DJing at a festival versus a club?

“I’m overstressed in festivals!! No honestly, with my sax we always want to give our best, in the smalls venues and also in the biggest. In festivals we just have more space to give more of a show, more energy and movement on stage. But I’m still learning and want to develop my show for big stages with more live and video in the future. Just don’t feel ready yet for this.”

Best ever festival experience?

“Until now I think it was the Bravalla festival in Sweden. Summerfestival in Belgium was crazy too. We already did a few really big festival like Panorama in France, Replay festival in Belgium, Palmesus festival in Norway…it’s always awesome for me to share my music with so many people.”

Cédric you admit that you started with music at a very young age, mainly influenced by your family. Tell us about your childhood, sounds like you hail from a musical family?

“Not really. When I started I first wanted to be a DJ, I was very young maybe 14, 16 years old. Then I quickly understood I wanted to do my own music. I finish my college in France and went in London to learn music production in Point Blank. My family influenced me in taste for music and music culture, but there wasn’t any real musicians around me – that’s why I’m not a professional instrument player – I know piano and some basics in guitar but’s that it. That’s also why my parents asked me to go to a marketing school also, to have some form of background before I started. But finally. ‘Jubel’ made me stop my studies!”

You went to a Music Production school in London back in 2011. What was London life like for you, did you check out any clubs and DJs?

“London was a big turn in my life because when I went there I was influenced by people such as Axwell, Avicii…people like that. When I arrived in London people I met where listening to really different things…from pop rock to really deep and tech house music. Also minimalists music. So during my stay in London I basically changed my musical tastes…and that’s what brought me to create Klingande and Punga and Jubel. Also I loved the London way of life! The food, bars, beers, clubs, girls…I can’t describe it, but I’d love to go back there.”

At what point did a career in music first start forming in your head?

“A few month ago, after summer 2013 when I started to sign contracts with labels in Europe. To hear my song on the radio and have more and more shows in big clubs and festivals is fabulous.”
