The Las Vegas superstar letting Love Come Home

Words : Dan Prince

Kristine a huge welcome to DMCWORLD Magazine…where in the world can we find you today?

“I am currently In Las Vegas where I am working on new music and a new tour show.”

What was the first piece of music you heard this morning?

The first piece of music I heard was the song I am currently writing and will record later this week. The title is still being debated. It’s very cool.”

So 2015 has started incredibly well with the third release from your best selling studio album…’’New & Number Ones’. You asked your fans via Facebook to choose what they wanted to see released and ‘Love Come Home’ was their choice. Were you pretty confident your fans were going to vote for this particular track?

We actually expected them to choose ‘Room At The Top’ from the NANO album but it was a great choice and the song has touched a lot of people.  The message really hit ‘HOME’ .”

For the UK release the track comes with remixes by Hoxton Whores, Todd Terry and Redanka. Why were these three producers chosen and what were your thoughts on each?

It was a team effort. Stacey and I let the remixes happen more organically and the stars aligned for the line up. We also met the team at Concrete Evidence and luckily they work with the Hoxton’s and I have always wanted to team up with them. It was meant to be.”

The video features The Life Cube, an art installation created by Scott Cohen, one of the forces behind the Burning Man event, who also makes a cameo in the music video. A cube is built in a run down area of town.  The idea is for people in the community to visit the cube, paint and draw on it and place wishes into the slots cut into the side of the cube.  After a year, the cube is burnt to the ground and a new cube is built in another dilapidated area that needs love. We love this video!!!!! How much involvement did you have in the creativity behind it?

“As soon as I found out about the Cube from Adan my director for the ‘So Close To Me’ I drove down to look at it . I was smitten by all the beautiful artwork painted and drawn on the Cube and it felt like a magnet for artistic people of all kinds as well as resembling  a huge square open air house. They were going to burn the Cube in four weeks – so we had to go into overdrive to get a plan, write a shot script, costumes, concept, permits etc. It was nuts!!”

And gotta ask, do you love Burning Man?

I do love Burning Man. I have had many friends that have gone and they always have a blast and share pics and videos, so I am looking forward to attending in the near future…”

True or false? You hold the World Record for Most Consecutive NO. 1 Billboard Club Hits…surpassing the likes of Madonna and Janet Jackson?

“Yes that is true…but it is very surreal!”

You have fought cancer, brought up children, moved to cities on your own…yet in a recent interview you claimed “music is the hardest thing in the world to do.” Really?

“The Music Biz is tough because it’s so trendy and changes so quickly .The technology, the production styles, equipment, song styles, remixers etc. and that’s just the recording side of the business. The live performance side is a whole different animal. You can have an amazing song but if you don’t have the budget to pay for a great video, killer remixers, a big radio campaign and buy airplay, it’s tough to get heard by the masses. It is a big money game and I’m an indie label so I am out here fighting with limited resources.”

It’s your birthday. Who are the 3 DJs you invite to spin…?

“Frankie Knuckles would be one of them. He was just amazing to watch working a crowd, his energy was infectious. Hex Hector because I know him, I love him and he knows how to work a room as well as work with live performers. Carl Cox:  that man could raise the dead with his song transitions and innate funk.”

A celebrity you would not want to get stuck in a lift with

“I would not want to get  stuck in a lift with Kim Khardashian. I think making conversation with her could be very challenging LOL!!!”

When was the last time you pressed rewind and listened to a track over again because it was so damned good?

“I loved ‘Get Lucky’ by Daft Punk. I wore that song out…played it over and over. I really annoyed my dancers! LOL”

True or false? You own a 50 acre potato farm?

“Yes I do have 50 acres and we grow potatoes or alfalfa depending on the market. It’s in my blood my family for centuries have been farming and making music.”

Okay let’s rewind for a moment. You hail from a musical family, your father was a country signer and your grandmother a classical violinist. What are your early memories of music as a child?

“Our house was constantly full of music. My mom was a full time musician and singer, my dad passed away when I was 3 but he was a very popular country singer and a very good songwriter as well. Both played guitar really well and everyone in my family played an instrument or 2 or three…”

What is the best and worst thing about living in Las Vegas?

The best thing about living in Vegas are the mild winters. The worst thing is the brutally hot summers.”

I understand your son was a scratch golfer at the age of 12. How is that dream going?

“My son JR is a great golfer. He grew 9 inches in 16 months so he is now having to relearn his swing and had to get all new clubs. He loves it so much. His passion, dedication and discipline to practice and play will propel him in the sport. Now he has the height too.”

And your daughter is already a classically trained violinist. Did you warn her against thinking of a career in the musical world or are you just letting her do her thing?

“I let my kids do their thing. She has been approached by two big NYC modeling agencies so Elizabeth Tylor is one to watch as well.”

True or false – you truncated to the letter W from your real surname Weitz because you were fed up with interviewers keep getting it wrong?

“True. People butchered my last name when ‘Feel What You Want’ blew up, so W was a safer bet.”

What were your first impressions on London?

I instantly loved London and the people are awesome. So much creative energy there !! One of my favorite places without doubt.”

Tell us 3 bucket list adventures you still wanna do in life…

“3 bucket list adventures? Hmmm. I would like to see wild animals in Africa on safari, also like to a see more of South America and spend more time in Europe…possibly live for a year on the coast in Italy.”

And finally – what is the next studio commitment on the horizon for you?

“I’ll be in the studio three days this week working on new songs and I’m also working with remixers for new 2015 remixes of ‘Feel What You Want’. That song will live forever!!”
