One of the coolest producers on the planet unleashes l’incroyable ‘Murda Dem’ on DIM MAK

Interview : Dan Prince

Welcome to DMCWORLD, well you have done it again…ensured total dancefloor craziness thanks to your productions…this time we praise the lord for ‘Murda Dem’ through the mighty DIM MAK stable. Please talk us through the sound and history of the track…

“I was talking with Autoerotique over Twitter. Then we began sharing some new tunes. He sent me an unfinished project that I loved. I asked him for the stems, I worked on it, and sent it to him the next day with a new drop and arrangement.. it became ‘Murda Dem’.”

When I  told The Buzz Chart crew I was interviewing you today, they shouted “we love his new tune – a brilliant frantic carnival banger, he has such a unique style!”. Thoughts on that little comment…?

“They’re absolutely right, I love that new tune too…”

You are no stranger to The Buzz Chart, ‘Turn It Up’ and ‘Lunatic’ both smashing in. How do you think your musical style is progressing?

“I’m just doing the kind of music I like to listen to and play in my sets. I like when its powerful  but melodic too. Even more emphasis on melody going forward.”

A massive moment for you when Dillon Francis opened his Tomorrowland set with ‘Murda Dem’…where were you when he delivered that piece of magic?

“I was touring in the US, but I saw some videos online and that moment was really cool. I love that guy, can’t wait to finish that track we’re doing together.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning…

“It’s difficult to do a top 10, but I’m currently playing some new track of mine, some new Snake music too,  some DJ 4B tune – he’s really talented, I love the last couple of Bare tunes too…”

Looks like you had an awesome time at DadaLand last week…what were some of your take home memories from that cracking gig?

“That show was really great. I love big stages. There was a giant balloon behind me and so many people working production, really good memory.”

A quote from Faithless’s Sister Bliss this week…”I think people will become bored with the stock crude generic sounds of EDM and the artists themselves may be somewhat musically bankrupt (David Guetta even admitted as such in a recent interview) as there is only so much touring you can do before it impacts on studio time and having space to think creatively.” Thoughts on that?

“Thats true, there is sooooo much bullshit out on the market today. If you take the Beatport TOP100, you got maybe 3 good tunes, 7 decent ones and 90 copies. And yes, it’s pretty hard to find the time to hit the studio when you tour every week. That’s why I will stop touring for the next 3 weeks and lock myself in the lab to produce some fresh tunes. I need to.”

What is the record that…

…reminds you of your childhood?

“Eurythmics ‘Sweet Dreams’.”

…always get you dancing?

“I dance only when I’m DJing.”

…reminds you of being broken hearted?

“Kanya West ‘Amazing’.”

…you wish you would have made?

“Nirvana – Smells like teen spirit. That song is PERFECT!”

In your opinion, is it possible for someone to make it as a DJ in 2014, without any production behind them?

“I really hope so, but we probably won’t see him at the Tomorrowland MainStage.”

Who is the last GREAT young DJ/producer you have spotted around the world?

“A Parisian guy named AAZAR whos coming out with some crazy ass tunes.”

Tell us about your studio set up…

“I do everything on my Macbook. From composing to mastering. I use Studio One 2 with no soundcard, I’m just plugged into a monitor station, which is out to 2 Adam S3XH monitors.”

It’s your birthday. Who are the 3 DJs you invite to spin and who is the one artist dead or alive you ask to come and sing you Happy Birthday…?

“I would celebrate it with my close friends like Tchami, Snake and Sebastien Benett. Let’s invite Bob Marley to share some good vibes.”

Best ever festival experience?

“Very difficult question..I can’t choose only one, I have so many good memories at a bunch of festivals like EDC New York, Hard Summer, DadaLand, NRG…”

You are no stranger to US shores…what are your thoughts on the scene over there…seems the clubbers are diversifying musically and discovering new genres all the time?

“I love playing in the US because people are very curious about new shit and are very knowledgeable. They also really want to enjoy their festival, they prepare their outfit a month in advance…that’s really great.”

Your favourite city in the world to DJ in…

“Hard to say…probably Los Angeles.”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“I got a new song with my man Sebastien Benett, which is coming out September 15th. Another with Quintino and that nice one with Dillon Francis. I’m also finishing up like 3 or 4 solo tracks that I’m very excited to release. Don’t be surprised if I put some fresh stuff out for free on my Facebook.”

Thank you dude. Appreciate your time.

“Thank you Dan, I love your haircut.”
