One of Sankeys finest residents gets set for the ADE assault

Interview : Dan Prince

Dude welcome to DMCWORLD, where in the world are you right now?

“I’m in Leeds, in the UK ahead of my gig at Mint club for Teknicolor.”

Another crazy weekend behind you, spinning in Lithuania and then your beloved Sankeys in Ibiza. How on earth was Friday night, what is the scene like there?

“It’s good! Compared to Sankeys it’s a different animal altogether but they seem to have good understanding of music and they really come there for the music and pay attention, but it was really good, I had a lot of fun.”

Saturday saw you back on Ibizan soil at your big Playa d’en Bossa residency. Many were looking at you to make your mark similar to how Solomun exploded in 2012. So let’s get started, looking back, how has summer at Sankeys been for you? You enjoyed it?

“It’s been amazing, but I am getting a little tired of that solomun comparison, because first of all I didn’t have my own night, and my own brand to push, and I wasn’t in charge of the bookings and I don’t run a label!  I am very young still, but I think the summer has gone really well, I have evolved as a producer and DJ and really gotten a taste for playing bigger crowds and more peak time stuff, it’s been incredible getting exposure to so many people.”

You have been based on the island all summer, tell us what you love about Ibiza…

“There are pros and cons for sure.  The good thing is that every day is a Saturday and you can block out the world and you don’t have to be a member of the world society, you can just get lost in this utopian, perfect party paradise, but at the same time that does get a little boring and you feel like you are living in a bubble.  I have been there for two months altogether living on the island and I now feel like I need to be a more active citizen of the world and get back in touch with what’s going on, so it’s good to come back!  But if I have to say one thing that is good about it, then it must be the food.”

Have you checked out any other clubs and DJs this year on the white isle?

“Yeah sure, I have been to most the Sankeys nights, to DC10, to Paradise, to Music On, to Solomun at Pacha.  I probably haven’t been as good as I should have been this year and checked out all the stuff I should have done, I never went to Space this year, which I am ashamed of!  But it just never got to that point, but when you are a resident at one place you tend to go back there and I really love the music they have been putting out in Sankeys.  Sankeys has been amazing all over I think.”

Anthem of the summer?

“That is a tough question! It’s been changing all over the summer, but the Neville Watson remix of wreckless of your love from Azazi and three.  I have been playing Atland by Mind Against a shit load and life and death by tale of us.  But probably my go to track this year has been DBA by Michael Jansens and Cozzy D.”

What has been your favourite night at Sankeys this summer?

“I have to say Carnival, Flying Circus and Diynamic.  Those three have been standing out to me musically.  It’s been amazing.”

What DJs have really stood out for you at the club, who has surprised you?

“Adriatique have been making my jaw drop every set they play. Audiofly were incredible and Blond:ish were incredible both times as well.  It’s hard to put down just one name because there has been so much talent on the island.”

What is the biggest compliment you have received from a clubber there this summer?

“If any…I don’t know! I heard someone had flown in from Dubai to see me at Sankeys. Only to see me!  That was one of the biggest compliments someone can pay, all that effort that they make just to hear you play.”

So you are moving back to Oslo next week…what are you looking forward to / not looking forward to?

“Looking forward to meeting my friends and seeing whats going on in the scene and starting to participate in that scene again.  I think I have been away for too long now, the scene in Oslo is very important to me as a DJ and a producer.  But I am not looking forward to clubs closing at 3am and people being super drunk everywhere.  And its not the same attentiveness to the music and the DJs in Oslo as it is in Ibiza.”

Away from Ibiza, where have been some of the stand out gigs this summer?

“Different festivals all around really.  Loveland festival in Amsterdam was incredible, the sun was setting, 2000 people, it was incredible!”

A massive night coming up on October 18th when Sankeys hit ADE in Amsterdam for the first time where you will be joining Darius Syrossian and Enzo Siragusa. How important is ADE to the dance music world?

“I think you are asking the wrong guy, it’s not my field of expertise.  It’s very important for the business side of music, it’s kind of a Miami Winter Music Conference thing where people show of tracks they have, and label nights, it’s definitely important but I think its more of a celebration of music than anything else to be honest.  It’s just people in Holland, they just love music and they just love music and I think that is the main point of it, just to entertain and make people happy as we all aspire to, but I am not really the guy to ask that question to and put any weight on the answer.”

What is coming next from you studio wise?

“I am changing my style a little bit, going to be a bit more experimental, less vocals, more experimental sound and sound design.  Maybe a release on Poesie, poetry it means in German.”

And finally, will you be back for more in Ibiza 2014?

“If David Vincent wants me to!”
