Produced by DMC DJ World Champion Cutmaster Swift and directed and narrated by Tony Prince, the series checks in with DJs and Music Industry legends all over the world filmed in locations including Los Angeles, Ibiza, Miami, Amsterdam, London, New York…and Luxembourg!
Nightclub DJs started their journey back in the 60s in ballrooms and, like their radio counterparts, ran into resistance from the Musicians Union who tried to ban records from venues and the BBC. This led to the arrival 50 years ago of the pirate radio ship Radio Caroline, a floating jukebox playing music 24/7. The DMC documentary has gathered lots of pirate radio film which will show vividly what happened around the British Isles when pirates ruled the waves. Interviews with radio’s leading controllers including Alan Keen (Radio London and Luxembourg) Johnny Beerling (Head of BBC Radio One) and Trevor Dann (leading Radio One producer) all reveal the inner sanctum of goings on at the BBC. Richard Park boss of Global Radio speaks on behalf of independent radio.
The first episode in The History of DJ will commence with DMC’s own story…
Tony Prince: “I’m aware that today’s clubbers, new DJs and radio fans have little knowledge of DMC’s history and I felt it important that they knew the documentary maker’s background so they might understand our depth of DJ knowledge, experience and reputation which allows us to tell this story. There is no doubt that the DJ in any guise has come a long way. Their journey is a powerful story and one that needs to be told for future generations to know where it all began and to witness the DJ industries giant leaps across the decades”.
Further DJ interviews include Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed, Joey Negro, Alfredo, Dave Seaman, Erick Morillo, Fatboy Slim, Darren Hughes, Andy McKay, Cash Money and Danny Tenaglia.
Highlights across the series include…
Big Band vs Rock n Roll – Alan Freed, Wolfman Jack, Murray the K
Garry Brown – Head of Music for Top Rank Dancing recalls their conflict with the MU and how vinyl won the day
Radio Luxembourg – the original DJ team return to Luxembourg to recall their adventures
