Ibiza 2012 Part 1 (M-Z)

Featuring Nicky Romero, Paul Oakenfold, Roger Sanchez, Trevor Fung and many more

Lovely Laura

Why do you love Ibiza?

“Right now I am looking out my window to a beautiful clear blue sky, an even deeper blue sea and sun drenched pine trees…who couldn’t love Ibiza?! I flew in from London last night where I left freezing temperatures and blistering rain – don’t get me wrong, I love England for many reasons but unfortunately the weather isn’t one of them! Of course it’s not only just about the weather here in Ibiza, there is something so magical about this place. For one, I notice in myself that I’m a completely different person when here than anywhere else in the world. From the moment I step off the plane I have this amazing feeling of coming home. I completely de-stress! It’s undeniable that there is a special energy here…and we haven’t even touched on the music scene yet! It really is a global hub of new sounds every summer attracting the biggest names in dance music to take centre stage. Every week during the season there is an incredible act playing live on your doorstep somewhere – it’s almost too much to take in and quite a task to see EVERYTHING!!! I’m just so grateful to be here and to be involved with the Ibiza season; it really is a dream come true.”

Favourite Ibiza memory?

“Mmmm… tricky, too many to choose from! Each year there are so many special moments, whether they’re chilling on a boat, having a picnic or an exceptional euphoric moment on the dancefloor. One very special memory that I will never forget was a Sunday night out at the old El Divino back in 2008. It was Louis Vega’s Soul Heaven party and India came to sing a guest spot – incredible! She moved me so much that I had tears streaming down my face through her whole performance!!! That was one very special memory…”

What will I be doing in Ibiza this year?

“Hed Kandi of course! Every Saturday night at Es Paradis, again another bigger and even better party than last year, so very excited!!! I’m also doing a live Balearica Unplugged session with Tyrrell every sunset on a Wednesday at On The Rocks at Playa es Codolar, so also very excited about that! I also recently wrote a track with Kid Stone called Rio which I’ve since learned has been selected for the Cafe del Mar album this year, so I’m one very happy lady right now.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“My first time Ibiza was when I played there the first time. It was in a small room at Privilege. It was called `Nature Club`. It was my birthday and two DJ´s were booked, but the other DJ didn’t appear, so I played 8 hrs alone on my birthday!”

“Difficult Question. I think Isolee´s “Beau Mot Plage” hits the vibe perfectly.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Yes. I think door prices around 60 euros like they were last year are too expensive as well. I don’t understand what legitimises these extraterrestrial prices?”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“I thought it was sexy, spiritual and surreal all at once.”

“The first DJ I heard was Jose Padilla in Cafe Del Mar. But that wasn’t a club – the first club and DJ was Pippi at Pacha in 1988.”

Why is Ibiza so magical?

“Personally, I believe all the new age hippy shit about converging laylines and Nostradamus predicting it’s the only safe to be come Armageddon.”

How has Ibiza changed since you first went?

“It’s more built up and more expensive – but so has everywhere else in the world.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“‘Your Love’ by Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle. I first heard it in Space in 1989 when only about 150 people went there. I was lying on a beanbag, tripping, watching about 20 people in a circle enthusiastically dancing to it at 11am and it was kind of a magic moment. Whenever I hear it it takes me back there. Around and around and around and around…”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“Dunno yet – it’s in God’s hands…”

If you get there, what one track are you looking forward to spinning there this summer?

“I like Aura myself.”

What are your thoughts on the pop live artists invasion of Ibiza?

“I saw The Specials at Ibiza Rocks the year before last which is something I’ve been meaning to do since the age of 11. The more music the better. Hopefully it’s encouraging diversity which Ibiza used to be famous for. Hearing tinny house music-by-numbers coming out of every speaker on the island does my nut in after a while.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“My back garden.”

Matt Playford

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“Well it was at the end of the 90’s which was  a good 10 years after my love for house music  began (I considered myself very late to the Ibiza party). I was completely blown away…just a lot of good looking like minded people having as much fun as possible.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“The first  place I went to was km5 to see a secret Radio 1 broadcast. That night  the DJ  from Radio 1 took me to Space, I can’t remember who was playing that night, it went on for very long time though. I think it was Derrick Carter!.”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“I’m playing at Space resuming my residency at We Love.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“There are so many records that sum up ibiza and there’s different  reasons for different places and records. I’d say the record I find it impossible not to think of Ibiza when I hear it is Manual
Gottsching e2-e4.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Yes and no. Yes cos it’s a lot of money, but  no cos it’s the best place to party on earth. I think the drinks are a bit expensive – they could do with pulling them back, if Spain comes out of the euro then the chances are their currency will be debased against the pound and the euro…so we could have the £5 drink in pacha soon!”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“KM5 / CALA  NOVA.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“The IMS is by far the best music  conference on the planet the people that run it have been more or less at the top of dance music business for years. The  information and  the people you would meet there can teach you many things, it’s a real education.”

“SPACE on a Sunday  night – “WE LOVE”.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“THERE is no No .2. Only Ibiza.”

Mo Chaudry

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“The first time I visited Ibiza was 1992. Back then the place was a very relaxed and a laid back environment. We stayed in the Ibiza old town and they really did have a “siesta” in the old days, where Ibiza Town was a ghost town mid afternoon. We saw Kylie Minogue at an open air Privilege, in those days Amnesia was also open air and Pikes was indeed the luxury place.”

What was the reason you came to Ibiza to work in the first place?

“Cream were looking to set up a grown up and professional operation so they asked me if I would take the opportunity to be press and marketing man. If memory serves me right, this was the first in terms of Ibiza promoters.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“The first club I went to was the last year of Extravagance at KU. As I said, it was open air with Kylie performing live and DJs Boy George, Dave Morales and Danny Rampling. An amazing experience!!!”

You ran the mighty Cream for a decade in Ibiza – who was the biggest DJ you had on, in that time?

“I have had the privilege to work with the best. A roll call of Paul Oakenfold, Roger Sanchez, John Digweed, Seb Fontaine, Sasha, Pete Tong, Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk, Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Deadmau5 and Phat Phil Cooper (Phil is certainly the biggest!!!!).”
What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“‘Music Sounds Better With You’ and ‘House Music’ by Eddie Amador.”

What is the biggest change you have seen on the island over the years?

“Roads, access to telephone lines, construction and more construction. I think the secret Ibiza has been fully colonised.”

Best and worst thing about Ibiza?

“It’s still the best place in the world for me. The best and worse go hand in hand. The devil and angel are always playing together here. Summer is full of magic and magical events and can suddenly become horrendous (over crowded and tiring). Winter can be a magical calm and become draining for a lack of excitement!!!”

Do you think door prices at 80euros for some events are too expensive this summer?

“The whole island is moving to a more up market and a lot of the visitors can easily afford to pay that and more. If you saw the desperation of punters for the SHM or Guetta shows at Pacha, then you would say the market is forcing the prices up. You have the expensive and the cheap here, this for me is the magic combination of Ibiza.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Fave Bar – Kumharas!! Beach – Cala Conte!! But I will not tell you the two little coves where I go to escape in the summer!!!”

IMS – business or pleasure for you?

“A bit of both. It’s amazing how it has grown and become an essential part of the island’s summer.”

Which DJ epitomises everything that is Ibiza?

“Every single artist has taken the island to heart. For me they all represent the strands which together make the island unique. The commercial and the underground fuse together unlike any place in the world. The free parties lead to the super clubs and back again!!!”

What one event are you really looking forward to this summer?

“The closings!! Ha Ha!!!”

Nicky Romero

What is your earliest memory of Ibiza?

“Ha! My earliest is that of last year when David Guetta invited me to come and play for his F*** Me I’m Famous night at Pacha. I had never been to the island before so this was a great first impression.”

Which DJ epitomises Ibiza for you?

“I’d have to say David too, he was the first one I saw play there and that impression lasts I’d like to say. This year I will return for a residency at Pacha with David, so really looking forward to that.”

Where else are you playing this summer?

“I think the better question would be where not 😉 My schedule is very full I will be frequenting the states but also doing loads of festivals and gigs in Europe, also really really looking forward to this!

What 1 tune are your looking forward to spinning out there this year?

“I am working on a track that has the Nervo Girls and I collaborating and it is a track that has a summer vibe and really cool feel to it. I am testing it now here and there and I am very anxious to see how it does with the big crowds. I will also play out the track I will be releasing on my own label first, it is called ‘WTF?!’, that kills! I am in love with that track!!!!”

Do you think the door prices of up to 80euros is too expensive this year?

“As I understand, depending where you would go, the prices even exceed the 80 euro level last year, so the trend that getting into a club is getting more and more expensive. I feel it is not really a good thing. I think people that have regular jobs and save up all year to be able to go on holiday will not be able to afford it any more at some point.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“To be honest, I have only been on the island three times last year and all of them I arrived with only an hour or two before my set and had to leave right after. So I will have to owe you an answer to that one!”

Best club night for you over the years?

“Same as above, but would love to go and check out the other nights though…”

What record always reminds you of Ibiza?

“I don’t know why but I really get that Ibiza vibe when listen to ‘Leave The World Being’ by SHM…”

“I’d say for now, go and see the people of Unlocked in Palermo – they know how to put on a gig!!”

Norman Doray

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“I remember it so well. My first time was 14th August 2008, I was invited to play with David Guetta at Pacha Ibiza!

“Imagine for your first time…and my birthday is on the 15th…enough said haha!”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“Nothing is confirmed for now, but I will probably be again at Pacha, Ushuaia and Cafe Mambo…the 3 best places on the island for me.”

What one track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“It’s my new track in collaboration with Eddie Thoneick, which is gonna be released on time for the summer on Steve Angello’s record label, Size Records.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“Humm hard to say. It’s between Stardust “Music Sounds Better With You” and Mark Knight & MTV “Sandcastles”…both amazing.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Yeah I think it’s really expensive but on the other hand the quality of the shows and the DJs who are filling up stadiums the rest of the year, well here you can see them closer and feel such a good atmosphere!!!”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“I love Cafe Mambo as a bar…probably the best concept bar and the best sunset…I love a lot of beaches in Ibiza but the best ones are hidden…I can’t give you names shhh!”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“Probably business, but in Ibiza it is so a pleasure too.”
What is the best club in Ibiza?

“For me, Pacha, no doubt!!!”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?
“Hard to say, everything is moving so fast but i would say probably Brazil.”

Paul Harris

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“The first time I went was either 1990 or 1991. It was when the Flying Trip happened (the London club). Back then it was Ku, the Star Club and Amnesia, I think I spent all my money in the first two days so not much has changed!!. But yes they was something special about the island for sure, the attitude was different and dancing in open air clubs was something special.”

“Yes, but it’s changed a hell of a lot since I first went. Now look at the production and the shows these clubs put on. That costs money.”

“Salinas is still my favourite beach after all these years. As for a bar, I honestly don’t really go to any.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“I’m a very big lover of South America and especially Brazil. So I must say Florianopolis.”

Paul Oakenfold

What is your earliest memory of Ibiza?

“Well the first time I went there was in 1986 on holiday but the trip that really blew me away was when I went back in 1987 with Nicky Holloway, Danny Rampling and Johnny Walker. We all stayed in this Villa in Port Estrol – across the bay from San Antonio. I had my birthday while we were there and it was a truly incredible night that changed everything as far as music was concerned.”

What record always reminds you of Ibiza?

“I was struck by the beauty of the place even flying into Eivissa Airport – peering out of the little window seeing lovely secluded coves, turquoise sea and of course hundreds of ant-like party-goers waving up at the plane on Playa D’en Bossa beach! Over the years I always hear people talking about how being in Ibiza immediately gives them an overwhelming sense of wellbeing and belonging – I’m no different.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

What one track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“Martin Solveig – ‘The Night Out’ (Madeon Remix) looks set to be a big one this Summer- all the more impressive that Madeon is only 17 years old. His sound is pure, French dance-pop and is clearly influenced by other Gallic greats like Justice, Daft Punk and Fred Falke. Just superb.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“Samim – ‘Heater’.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“I think entry prices for big nights will never be reasonable. Trips to Ibiza can require a bit of strategic planning when it comes to finances, prioritising favourite DJs etc. There’ll always be a bit of disappointment at having to make a few sacrifices here and there, but I was always happy to settle for a grim hotel if it meant I could squeeze in a few more parties…”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

‘I went to KM5 for the first time last year and Wally Lopez was playing. Such a gorgeous place with slightly bohemian decor, hidden corners and paths winding inside and outside – a great vibe there. Beach-wise, Playa D’en Bossa for beachside boogying; for peace and privacy, explore the north of the island.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“I hear Las Vegas is up there as a contender, though it’s still on my to-do list! From personal experience, one of my best party experiences has been in Berlin. An amazing city!”

Paul Potter

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“Jesus. Can i have a week on this question!”

Why is Ibiza so magical?

“It’s magical because anything goes and you meet like minded people from all over the world that are there for the same reason. Apart from that, it’s a beautiful island that you discover new little gems every time you go.”

How has Ibiza changed since you first went?

“It’s made me realise I cannot party for three days any more without sleep.”

“Yes. Nothing else to say about it apart from some DJ fees are ridiculous. So to a degree, the clubs are governed by DJ fees.”

“Talamanca Beach. A forgotten gem that’s close to Ibiza Town and Marina and Talamanca Hostal Beach Bar – my summer Balearic hideout with DJ Don Simon Vino Blanco. Go check him!”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“Can anyone do one without the other in Ibiza? It’s a bit like trying not to chew a fruit pastel!”

What is the best club in Ibiza ?

“For me it’s Pacha. Not necessarily for all the DJ line ups, but the layout. It’s not too big, still intimate in its own way. The club is sexy and that’s good thing.”

Best club night?

“VAGABUNDOS, cool without trying to be too cool. It’s sexy and fun.”

What are your thoughts on the pop live artists invasion of Ibiza?

“Funnily enough, four years ago I offered Timbaland (who I was working with at the time) to a lot of clubs for a very cheap fee. All the clubs came back with the response with ‘that’s not the sort of booking we make for Ibiza!’. How they are all eating their own words now ey!!” I think its great – why not be an island with something for everyone but as long as its relevant in some kind way. Some bookings will seem strange to people at the moment as the island develops and evolves in this area of live music.  I think that will level after this season when certain promoters  see what works and what does not and punters get used to it.  It will also open the ways for artists to collaborate with each other that would perhaps never off even listened to each others music and push dance/electronic music to other areas so thats kind of exciting ! It Also will bring another audience to the Island so thats a good thing. After all a good record is a good record so im all for it.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“My kitchen most weekends.”

Who are the big Urbania artists smashing Ibiza this year that you are promoting?

You were part of the team who brought Mixmag with the likes of Sasha and Frankie Knuckles on the bill, why did you choose Pacha back then in 1996?

“Answered this to a degree in the above question Pacha is the sexiest club on the Island and a vital ingredient to anyone’s life. I do remember vividly Frankie Knuckles management agreeing to do the gig on the phone and nearly pissing my pants! Good times.”

Funniest moment of 2011?

“Having a party aboard a 125 ft Yacht for two weeks parked next to the King of Qatar’s boat. I raved the yacht up with sound, light and Sasha on the decks! Only in Ibiza. Very funny until I got escorted to the police station by the sea police with the French captain of the yacht having had 45 complaints during that night and told you are going to jail! Soon took the grin of my face, luckily we were just fined! This year we have a faster boat!”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Mambo and I love the Figueretas Beach. But that’s just probably because I’ve never been to another beach. I’m not a beach type. I hate sand!”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAPCm76g6fs

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Definitely, Your average clubber will only be able to afford a couple of parties and won’t spend lots at the bar. Surely if the pricing was more reasonable and the drinks a tad cheaper, people would spend a whole lot more?”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Es Vive’s bar for a serious after party has to be one of the best. With Jason and Jamie hosting, you can’t go wrong. Talamanca beach has been a real favourite for me recently, centrally located but almost a bit of a secret at the same time.”

Ibiza story you would like to tell?

“Performing Max Linen’s ‘The Soulshaker’ LIVE at the closing party of Manumission, playing the instrumental version off a vinyl dub plate whilst Keithen Carter was on stage. My good friend John Kelly comes into the booth, due to play next and presses stop on the deck that’s playing. Immediate silence with 10k people cheering! I quickly whack the needle back to the start, whole place is rocking’ again…One of my jobs was to hit the pitch shifter on the ‘Feeeeeeellll the Druuuuumms’ vocal part. We had sound checked earlier in the day, setting up a pitch shifter so it took the vocal low, deep and rumbling, so when punched the ‘Feel The Drums’ hook really bellowed out. My big moment approaches, I hit the pitch shifter with authority and the ‘bellow’ has turned into a high pitched munchkin’esque squeal! There were some seriously confused faces that night. The sound engineer, after we had left the earlier soundcheck liked the look of the pitch shifter and decided to play with it, in turn changing all the settings we had set up. It was that bad, I was laughing about it for days. We then nailed the performance at the We Love Space closing, MTV & Popworld Live, so not all bad, but something I’ll never forget…”

Roger Sanchez

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

1. Roger Sanchez “Another Chance” – when that record came out, I had my first Release Yourself residency on the island and it was my soundtrack of the summer.  It reminds me of playing at El Divino in the port of Ibiza town, with the sun rising and everyone’s hands in the air…a pure Balearic moment.
2. Laurent Garnier “The Man With The Red Face” – That was one of the tracks that I played on the Terrace at Space.  Again, another sunrise moment of Balearic bliss.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“I think the island is getting very expensive, and door prices need to have a level of reality for the audience. I think if they keep increasing, it might risk seeming abusive to some of those who come to the island with limited resources.  We can’t alienate the true fans.”

Seamus Haji

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“My first time was in 2000 and I remember arriving late from a gig in Portugal and spending my first night at the Manumission hotel. I was kissed by a rather pretty girl on reception when I arrived and was then shown to my room where I was told that Derek Dahlarge had been holed up for about 2 months on a bender (nice). I remember finding an old pizza slice in the wardrobe! First thing in the morning a dwarf wandered into my room just as I stepped out of the shower. The hotel’s idea of breakfast was some pots of yoghurt, a bit of fruit and some tepid coffee left out on the bar downstairs. I remember seeing Kris Needs and some other revellers attempting to eat some breakfast after stumbling in from a long night out.  I just thought “This is a crazy place!”

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“It’s hard to describe my first impressions of ibiza, the feeling I got when I walked out of the airport for the first time was pretty special and I still get it to this day. I was 15 when I first went to ibiza, my best friend from school’s mum and dad have a villa there so I was very lucky with being able to stay with them when I was that young…getting in a taxi and seeing the place for the first time was magical and weirdly I remember feeling like I was home.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“As a kid in England at that time all I heard about was Manumission at Privilege and obviously the sex show, so as soon as we got to the island we had to go to see that. I remember queueing for hours then finally getting in and just being blown away by the size of it and the sound, Pete Tong and Seb Fontaine were playing, it was absolutely mind blowing! “

*I was 18, and thought, ‘wow! This is where I wanna play!!!!!”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?
“I was invited to Ibiza by  a big promoter from my hometown Rome and at at the time he co-owned the DC 10 club. So when I arrived to his villa I met all the DJs staying there – Timo Mass, Loco Dice, Tania Volcano…I was so happy!! Later that day I went with them to to the Circoloco-DC10 Monday Party. That was quite an introduction to the Ibiza world!!!”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“I’ve just finished the mix of my new single that is coming out on Defected in late June. I really hope that is gonna work as the perfect summer jam!!!”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?
“‘Addicted To Drums’  Oscar G.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?
“People are always gonna save some money to have fun.. and the level of organisation that certain clubs in Ibiza require, lights, dancers, bar staff…kinda justifies that price.”

Favourite beach in Ibiza?
*Ah, to be honest I just hang around in villas until the sun comes down, not a big beach fan!!

IMS – business or pleasure?
“The business of pleasure!!”

What is the best club in Ibiza?
“DC10!!!!”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“Any place can be rocking, people make the parties!!”

Squatters

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“Well when I first went I was 19, Oli went when he was 16 with a group of mates from school! The classic inbetweeners style lads hol. The first time I went I did they typical picture outside the airport in my shorts and sunglasses!! Ibiza is the only place I have been in the world that is actually exactly how you picture it in your head.. but better!! Parts of the island, e.g. San Antonio, are just dedicated to partying and having fun 24/7. Now I’m growing up a bit though it’s great to appreciate all the beauty of the island. There are loads of cool places to chill and some fantasic little towns and villages!! Ibiza has something for everyone. So if Mum & Dad insist on going… Send em to the other end of the island.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“The first time I went a friend and I got off the plane at 2am in the morning, got a taxi to the hotel, got changed, got back into the taxi and went straight to Privilege. It was Tiesto’s night Clublife and it was the best clubbing experience I have still to this date ever had! Probably because my first Ibiza experience was the world’s biggest club!! The rest of the night was a bluuur…”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“We’re pleased to be back at Judgement Sundays at Eden in San Antonio. We had such a great time there last year and met some great people. And it’s been a honour to be asked back to play again. You can catch us playing there on 24th June, 5th August, 26th August, 16th September and you can also catch us at Judgement at BCM in Mallorca 3rd July and 28th August.”

What one track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“We have recently finished a collab with Steve Edwards who has previously sung on tracks for the likes of Axwell and Bob Sinclar. It’s a big room summer track and we will be able to release more news about it soon! So keep your ears out for The Squatters feat. Steve Edwards – ‘Back To The Stars’.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“For me it has to be Ayla – ‘Ayla’, purely because I decided to become a DJ after watching ‘Kevin and Perry’ when I was 13. At a guess Oli’s would have to be some thing big chunky and housy because when he got in to DJing he was well into his house music.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“I have always thought that Ibiza in general is far too expensive. Last year I went in to a shop for a bottle of water and walked out with a litre of San Miguel! The water was 4euros for 500ml or 2euros for a big bottle of beer!! Club entry and club drinks prices are ridiculous too and I would personally love to see a cheaper Ibiza. For years the island has been packed out year by year with clubbers and people still pay it! So as far as business goes if they know they’re going get the money off people then they will keep charging these prices. Judgement Sundays charged 35euros last year which I think is a fair price for the line ups you see. And they do this to be fair to the clubbers.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“It has to be the Golden Buddha in San Antonio. It’s just around the corner from the hotel we usually stay in and it has loads of bean bags sofas and soft things to chill out on, outside and in! Perfect for watching the Ibiza sunset, soaking up rays or hanging out of your backside from the night before! Also they do pretty good food if ya fancy a quick lunch.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“I would have to be professional and say I would be there on business, but I’m sure we would be getting up to all sorts of mischief while were there so…”pleaseness”

What is the best club in Ibiza?

“Well we would have to say Eden because that’s where we have had the most fun! Not just playing for Judgement but over the years as well. Although I love Amnesia purely because Kevin & Perry was filmed there! And Oli loves Space. One of the best DJ sets he ever saw and enjoyed was Danny Howell’s when he first went out there clubbing and still talks about that night today every time someone mentions Space.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“In my pants. No, I think it’s got to be Miami when the Winter Music Conference is on! Every year it gets bigger and better. I mean come on!! They had 2Pac there this year!! Thanks for having us guys!! Don’t forget to check out our website www.the-squatters.com

Taras De Voorde

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“Definetely the contrast between rest/beauty and crazyness/parties…”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“I went to Amnesia on Monday, so Cocoon was hosting that big place. I totally lost my mind dancing to DJ Sneak b2b Ricardo Villalobos.”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“All Gone Pete Tong at Pacha and more tab…”

What 1 track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“Pff, hard question! I think some records made by Dutch duo, Klankarbeit! And of course my own new records…”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“D-Note – ‘Shed My Skin’ because of the very cool video and The Game. One of my own records which blew up made me play in Ibiza.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Well, apparently people are still willing to pay that large amount of money, so I guess it’s OK for them but personally I think it is way too much.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Can’t really tell you cause I have never been to a bar in Ibiza, I’d rather have a drink and a nice BBQ in our villa before we go clubbing. For beaches, I prefer the small desolated beaches.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“Business.”

What is the best club in Ibiza?

“That really depends on who’s playing or who is the hosting the night. I think every club has its own charms.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“Holland!”

Anonymous story you would like to tell?

“Haha, the first time I went to club in Ibiza I took an XTC pill, had an awesome night but it felt different than ‘usual’ When the DJ played his last record and we were outside I realized that I hadn’t taken XTC but some 2cb or something cause I had hallucinations like crazy. Hard to describe but it was a night I will never forget. In a positive way.”

Terry Farley

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

”We went on a lads holiday in ’82 and stayed in San An which was pretty decent musically back then and lager lout culture had not reached ibiza – we loved it although i wish I had known about Ku back then as I’d have loved to have pestered Freddie Mercury and Elton for some free bugle.”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing?

“That was later in ’88 and Amnesia with the king of Ibiza Alfredo – truly a magical night, morning etc. As a DJ there is no one else who represents the island in such a organic manner – todays kids need to get schooled by the master.”

Why is Ibiza so magical?

“It has a pulse of it’s own – no matter how hard people try to fuck it up it fights back although 80 euros a pop and rubbish EDM music just might kill its personality off this year.”

How has Ibiza changed since you first went?

“Visually it’s changed beyond recognition in the south, ugly motorways and huge billboards with pics of ugly trance DJs.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“THE Ibiza record of all time is Nelson n’ Elkin’s ‘Jibaro’, made I think in 74. It was THE anthem at Amnesia and the tune that everyone spent the whole of 87 / 88 / 89 chasing.”

I take it by your previous answer that you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer then?

“It’s a disgrace. House music was supposed to blow away such behaviour and the DJs who charge sky high prices are as guilty as the clubs – shame on you all – money grabbing only devalues the island’s culture.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Up in Portinax – my fave bar would be anywhere that sells a beer for less than 5 euros.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“Never bothered.”

What is the best club & club night in Ibiza ?

“Although it’s too packed these days, dc10/Circo Loco by a mile.”

What are your thoughts on the pop live artists invasion of Ibiza?

“Depends if they have a cultural connection to the island. I warmed up for the Primals at Amnesia last summer and there set was pure Balearic.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“At the moment – Dalston.”

Toni Tambourine

What is your earliest memory of Ibiza?

“Going to the Star Bar which is now Eden in 1987 and I was 17. I first heard Lil Louis ‘French Kiss’ for the first time and falling in love with it and dance music. I stayed at an 18-30 hotel with five of my best mates. Best holiday ever!”

Which DJ epitomises Ibiza for you?

“Erick Morillo, Jon Sa Trinxa, Tenaglia, Luciano and of course for the oldies Brandon Block and Alex P at Space.”

Why is Ibiza such a magical place?

“The people make it magical, I have never felt more at home and part of a beautiful scene full of likeminded people. Also when I am in Ibiza I have a sense of freedom that I do not have in other places.”

Do you think the door prices of up to 80euros is too expensive this year?

“Too expensive, the commercialisation of Ibiza is abhorrent.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“Favourite bar is Base Bar. Favourite beach is Selinas as ever.”

Best club night you have ever had in Ibiza?

“It was Sign Of The Times at Space on The Terrance in 1992, it was a glamorous night full of the most up for it London fashion crowd.”

What records always reminds you of Ibiza?

“Future Sound Of London – ‘Papa New Guinea’, Lil Louis – ‘French Kiss’, KOT – ‘Finally’.”

What are Listen Up excited about working on this Summer on the white isle?

“First of all Erick Morillo at Pacha, he is the absolute fundamental Ibizan DJ, he has set standards for over a decade. His night have the amazing ability to balance the underground with an element of commerciality but without compromising anything. His new outfit Sympho Nympho will make a big impression this year. We are also working with Jean Claude Ades, a super cool producer that will be performing at Leo and The Blue Marlin over the summer.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world, where is number two?

“Goa – without a shadow of a doubt.”

Trevor Fung

What made you go to Ibiza in the first place, what had you heard about the place?

“In 1980 I was working for a travel agency in Kensington, I had won a free trip to Ibiza.”

Where did you stay?

“I stayed at The Hotel Tropical in San Antonio for one week…what a blast!!”

What was the first club you went to…set the scene…?

“It was The Star Club, it was mainly full of Scandinavians, Europeans, but not many British tourists at the time.”

What records can you remember from that first trip?

“It was things like Odyssey “Use It Up And Wear It Out”, Diana Ross “Upside Down” and Stacy Lattishaw “Jump To The Beat.”

Who were the Spanish DJs playing back then, was Carlos around?

“Yes he was. He was the most influential DJ around when I was there. I learned a lot from him. He was playing things like Bob Marley “Could You Be Loved”, Joy Division “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, Roxy Music and the Stones tracks, more rock and indie with a few disco things thrown in and some Spanish remixed material. It was the way he mixed too.”

How was San Antonio different to it is now?

“Completely different. Much more laid back and not built up at all, with mostly European well heeled tourists, but not many English apart from holiday staff. Everything closed at 3am. I loved the beauty of the island, the laid back vibe, and the quality of the music. There were a few hippies there, from the 60’s.”

How many times did you that first summer?

“I went back again that summer and every year after that till 2002.”

What was it about Alfredo and Carlos that grabbed you?

“I first met Carlos in Es Paradis, it was the way he played all genres of music and they way he put it together…rock, indie, pop (mainly US mixes) and dance…all blended into one balearic beat. It was refreshing, and what I have always strived for from the beginning in my DJing and interest in music. I love all kinds of genres, always have. It was hard to get promoters to accept that back then. Traveling to Ibiza, and meeting Carlos, it was like I’d come home…in a musical way… I didn’t meet Alfredo till 1987 when he was working in Amnesia, I was there almost every night, the whole summer of 1987….phew!! He was doing the same, but a lot more dance tunes and Acid House, it was a brilliant mix, and I always knew the next record coming in before he mixed it.”

Tell us about the original after hours club Glory’s…

“We all used to go after Amnesia, plus all the headstrong clubbers from Es Paradis, Ku and Pacha, the venue was a crazy mix of trannies, gay and the nutty small crew of British workers. Playing hard indie and dance music mainly…the original Space to be honest and it was on the way to Ibiza Town from Amnesia on the same side, which is now a car showroom. It opened in August ‘87.”

How was Pacha different back then?

“The music always had that Pacha sound which was at the time very tribal instrumental four four music, a more trendy clientele, the music was ace.  The club was less built up and was a lot more open air, with its customary white back drop, a fantastic sound system and held about 1800 people.”0

How did it come about taking your first E?

“I think taking E is a personal thing. Yes they were around, from ’86. I was young, and dabbled, and yes it was an amazing experience. But nowadays when I look back, I realize that it was the music. I had been well on my way on my musical career both in the UK and Ibiza before I did. Yes, mind enhancing drugs will change music. But if you took E and listened to a lot of different music, it would make it worse, you’d have to get away from the music before it drove you mad. Good music will sound enhanced on E, and other music will sound bad. The press and the government highlighted the scene for its drugs, and missed the point. They did a big job, and soon every drug dealer was flocking to events, just because the media advertised it as a market. The term ‘Acid’ was coined to represent LSD, when it is in fact a reference to the more caustic industrial sound of pure Acid House, to distinguish it from the more disco and garage sound of House Music at that time. These days, I am reticent about talking about E, and promoting it in a glamorous way. For a start, E (MDMA) is rare. Kids these days buy pills, and other nasties, thinking that it’s the same as E. There is a lot of music around the clubs and bars of the world too, that have sprung up over the last decade, that have resulted from a lack of quality – maybe kids have to get drunk, and take pills they think are E, to endure it as much as the glamorized stories of the real scene back then. If the music and quality were as good today generally, they wouldn’t get so mashed. For me it has always been about the music. Quality dance music that makes your feet tap and dance anyway, without drugs.”

You started your own Project Ibiza…

“Well I started the Project Ibiza with my cousin Ian St. Paul – we rented it for the summer.  I had already started the Project Club London and it was a massive success.  Ibiza was calling me, for my third summer stint (1983 &’84 the other years).  It was a pivotal time for me, for music and DJ style. I had polished my style at the Project London over the winter, and it was the right time to have my own place in Ibiza. I guess when success and opportunity knocked, I went for it. Things were going really well in London, so I took a big chance and it worked.”

How did the whole Danny Rampling, Johnny Walker, Paul Oakenfold trip happen?

“I had invited Paul, he had been over to visit me in June and had to leave early for personal reasons. Invited him back for his birthday and he came with Danny, Nicky and Johnny for his birthday in August.  We had all been mates for years. I also did two package holidays with Nicky Holloway and Tommy Mack who runs the Black & White Ball in 1988 & 1989.”

What makes Ibiza so special even today?

“For its global recognition for the music industry. It’s still a beautiful island.”

What are the major changes since the 80s?

“The first time I saw hundreds of advertising boards with all the DJ’s and clubs leaving the airport terminal for the hotel was when it had changed. It is also very expensive now.  It has lost its original chilled out vibe, you have to travel further out to get that there now.”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“It is hard to just mention one, but if I have to it will be Elkin & Nelson – “Jibaro.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“Way too expensive, a bit of a joke really, drinks at 20 Euros each…ouch!!. It’s all about money these days. There are a few places there that try to be just about music and experience, but most of the island seems to have got lost in money. Some places there still offer quality for money, but there are lots there that don’t. They just cash in.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“It has to be the Café del Mar, best in the world. My favourite beach is Las Salinas. Another favourite place was called the Slabs, just past Calla Gracio along a track path, hard to find, but gorgeous.”

What is the best venue in Ibiza today?

“For me it is still Pacha. Pacha was there at the beginning, so will always have a fondness for the place. It’s changed a lot, but still love it. I played there a few years ago. Rocked it – what a blast.”

What are your thoughts on the pop live artist’s invasion of Ibiza?

“Well, it is just progression, Ibiza is the cultural centre of the world’s music industry, so it was bound to happen. I don’t know if I’d want to go hear them there though. For me the place has always been about new music, underground music, different styles put together. That is what has made Ibiza the place it is today. Going commercial may be a step in the wrong direction. But who am I to say. It makes money, and gives artists kudos.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“It has to be Berlin. I played there for over 2 years, once a month, I worked with US techno DJ’s like Underground Resistance, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Resse & Santoniio, Blake Baxte, Sven Vath, DJ Hell, WestBam and many other Detroit and Chicago DJs.  They have mixed that soulful tech sound with house and have got some fantastic music coming from Germany.”

What has been the craziest party you have survived out there?

“Well we had a few, but one of the best was Freddie Mercury’s up in the hills. The other was my birthday party. We’d been at the Café Del Mar. It went on for 3 days, with musicians, DJ’s and some lovely people.”

Yves La Rock

What was your first impressions of Ibiza when you first stepped onto the white isle?

“When I arrived in Ibiza I went directly to the north of the island where it’s more calm and wild and I was like, “wow, this is one of the most beautiful place that I’ve ever seen!” Then I said that it didn’t look like there were any big parties on this Island but when I went out that night, I thought straight away, this is the place for dance music!”

What was the first club you ever went to in Ibiza and who was DJing

“It was at Space with Carl Cox, what better way to pop your Ibiza cherry?”

Where are you playing this Summer?

“All around Europe and Asia, we’ll see if any Ibiza dates come into my calendar – usually I do just one or two very special dates with some friends, like last year’s Roger Sanchez night which was great fun.”

What 1 track are you looking forward to spinning there this Summer?

“I will have to say my brand new track “Love is a battlefield” I’ve made it for this summer, it’s a fantastic track which we’ll be releasing the instrumental for on June 1st and then the vocal version which we’ve secured one of the biggest female vocalists for – it’s the bomb!!!”

What classic record sums up Ibiza for you from over the years?

“Tropical Soundclash, DJ Gregory, amazing track, very hot, sexy, tribal, for me it sums up the passion and very latin feel of Ibiza.”

Do you think door prices at 80euros are too expensive this summer?

“When I was a teen paying 80 euro for me was impossible so yes I think it’s too expensive, but then again these days the DJs are more expensive.”

Favourite bar and beach in Ibiza?

“I’m very bad with the name but there is a small restaurant on the beach in the north, they have the best fish – maybe it’s good that I can’t remember the name so that it stays small and quiet.”

IMS – business or pleasure?

“First pleasure and then business – it’s a very good place to get a combination of both because everyone is there to do business, but in the sunshine rather than the rain of ADE so it makes it a bit easier to relax and chill out by the poolside while you’re talking shop.”

What is the best club in Ibiza?

“For me it’s not really the club but the DJs who are playing because all the clubs are good, they have to be, it’s the biggest dance music destination in the world so if your club isn’t amazing, then the DJs won’t play there, and the people won’t come, and the party won’t happen.”

If Ibiza is the number one party destination in the world – where is No. 2?

“Switzerland, no I’m joking… now the US is getting better and better so that would be number 2 for me.”
