Ibiza 2012 Special

What is your favourite memory of Ibiza 2012?

“Well I met someone really special out there this summer, so that is always a bonus. Playing three and a half hours in the Main Room at Space with Carl Cox was super special and I also did a really fun party at Pikes Hotel called Moustachio – which was more like a house party.”

Tune of the summer?

“Hmm…for me – ‘Chalk Farm’ by Kin Rao, or Miguel Lobo & Ramiro Lopez’ ‘No More Boots’.”

Most overplayed record of the summer?

“Not sure – I didn’t hear too many things too many times in all the times I went out. A lot of DJ’s were also just mashing up loops too, so its hard to say!”

Favourite resident DJ on the island?

“I keep giving two answers to all these questions…it’s a tough one, but I think Carl Cox was the most consistent – he smashed it every time!”

Why is Ibiza still the best party location in the world?

“Because the energy there is IMPOSSIBLE to supress! No matter what the authorities do, the show must go on and the island itself is magic – the climate, the international aspect, and of course the world’s best DJs every night in the World’s best clubs.”

Ibiza is now split straight down the middle with serious DJs spinning quality house and techno on one side, and DJs playing the big room bangers on the other. Discuss…

“I didn’t go to any of the commercial nights this summer, not even on a social….look – there is something for everyone out there. The kids that go to see Guetta, end up listening to Richie Hawtin sometimes and they convert….they have to start somewhere…”

What new party caused the biggest splash in their debut summer this year? And why?

“Enter, purely for the excitement of the residents and guests. Ttheir first summer all together in a club like Space on a weekly basis and they put a lot into it. There is huge competition in Ibiza, like nowhere else, but as new nights go they did very well this summer.”

Favourite restaurant and beach in Ibiza?

“Cala Conte is my favourite beach. Restaurant – La Tana in Dalt Villa – it’s an amazing Italian.”

Do you think the 123 Rocktronic Festival that featured the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Elton John, Sting, David Guetta and Tiesto this year is an important addition to the Ibiza summer, or do you think it is a case of one too many party on an already bulging season?

“I think it is a case of one too many parties – I wasn’t there, but I think they need to remember that the residents on the island are not really going to view a DJ/live act mix as anything other than another party and so they need to appeal more to the holiday makers – equally difficult. But I am sure the people that went enjoyed it, and the bands loved it too. I shouldn’t really speculate on this as I wasn’t there.”

What is the one record that will always remind you of Ibiza…?

“The Frankie Knuckles mix of Electribe 101’s ‘Talking With Myself’ –  he’s The DADDY of Ibiza Magic…”

Best venue in Ibiza and why?

“Ouch – these questions are so hard! Space. (But I love DC10/Amnesia too!).”

A lot of money has been spent on the island in recent years improving things, what do you think is the biggest improvement on the island?

“The Roads. Better. A lot better.”

What nationality are the craziest people on the dancefloor?

“English…come on…”

Breakthrough artist of 2012?

“Enzo Siragusa and Hector – smashing it.”

If you had to pick one person to go out clubbing with in Ibiza, who would it be?

My brother from another mother – Lewis Pennington, and boy did we go out!”

And finally, tell us about your first trip to the white isle…

“I was 17, almost 18. I was out in London on Sunday night and my friend said to me “What are you doing tomorrow?”. I said “Not much”. He put a plane ticket in my hand and said “Go home and pack your records and some clothes. You are coming to ibiza tomorrow, and playing at Amnesia…” So I did. And the night after, I got offered a residency, but I turned it down, because I wanted to make my name in London. They gave the residency to Alex P…It was AMAZING! I have been back every year for 23 years..It’s my home from home.
