Mobin Master

One of the leading producers in Australian dance music smashes it with his new anthem on Spinnin’

Word up Mobin, welcome to DMC towers. Where in the world are you right now?

“I’m in good ol’ Melbourne rockin’ it out in the studio Dan…”

Yet again you have the Buzz Chart crew jumping around the office, this time thanks to your huge crossover track with Ian Carey ‘Lights Out’ on Spinnin’. Tell us about the history of the tune…

“I worked on this vocal and sung it with a lyrics writer and best mate Aram Faizi. It sounded like a New Romantics 80s track like Spandau Ballet. I had Sarah Capodicasa aka Carerra replace my vocal and I pretty much creamed. Ian Carey heard the vocal and peaked too.  So he then smashed a killer instrumental and I had done some mixes too, then the song was born.”

October 15th sees another smash swinging our way in the form of your TateStrauss colab ‘Noise’, tell us about this track…

“Dude you are the research king! So this is a LMFAO style track with some more club tones and harder electro edges with a big big breakdown. We have Afro-American friend Maurice Morgan originally from Texus on the vocal! Tate thought of the words “noise” then it evolved into “Make some Muth@@@@ noise”.

You rework of ‘Show Me Love’ stayed an incredible 52 weeks in the ARIA charts. I interviewed Robin S last year and I asked her if she ever wanted to forget the words to the song whilst on stage as she must be so sick of it and she replied “Yes, Yes, Yes!”. Where was the strangest place you heard the tune?

“Having a disco nap in the hotel room in Sydney and woke to the organ riff coming through the window from somewhere random in the building. Wake up!!!!! That was actually during the “Show Me Love” tour…it just finished hahaha!!!”

As a child you were pretty much forced to learn music by a father who was deprived of music when he was a child. What’s the full story there?

“Again how the hell?? Impressive you are! My mother bought me a mini drum kit at 6 years of age. I was pushed into various classes at school and was eventually kicked out in year 5 from first year piano class. Violin lasted 5 weeks. Then I bought a drum kit and was in a band from about 10 years of age. My dad then bought my first synth when I was 16, then I programmed my first sequence.”

What were your first steps into the world of dance music…

“Tribal Funk was my alias on Bamboo Music making tribal buziness which was very popular with Carl Cox, Steve Lawler and all those jocks! My big first break is when I did a remix for “Don’t Call Me Baby” band Madison Avenue. Their 3rd single needed a mix and I hit it with a really cheesy banger.”

What is the best and worst thing about living in Melbourne?

“Amazing restaurants, easy to get around, parking is ample and a very easy life style. The weather sucks balls most of the time.”

One of the systems you go through when making a tune is you play it to your friends first, if they give it a thumbs down you head  back to the drawing board. Have they ever got it wrong?

“Almost never, my friends and people around me are usually right. But everyone has different taste so when it’s a pure club track, my “normal” friends don’t really get it.  ‘Show Me Love’ and ‘Lights Out’ are the only 2 with a universal thumbs up so far.”

What are you working on at the moment in the studio?

“We  (with Tate Strauss) are working with Nari and Milani on a surprise surprise, big room massive breakdown choon. They are going to do some bits back in Italy and hopefully will be done very soon. Very excited about this one. Also working another big vocal song which I have got these Italians interested in too!”

How did the idea for performing on stage with your very unique keytar come about? It’s a bit cooler than Judge Jules and his trumpet!

“Haha! Well a mate of mine Tom Stapleton who lives in Aussie, suggested I pull out his keytar on tour when doing live shows with the singer who did the rework vocal of ‘Show Me Love’. Worked a treat, so I then proceed to buy another 2 keytars! Besides 3 CDJs and a mixer get boring after a while.”

One of the producers you have worked with in the past who you hold in high esteem is Roger Sanchez. What are his qualities?

“Roger is just an all round nice guys and a legend! He like to have a good laugh and he is straight up when it comes to the groove. “no, it slows it down, it slows it down”, “needs to groove”…”

And what do you think are the qualities that make YOU a great producer?

“Patience, ability to finish tracks, discuss ideas and not be stubborn, try loads of things, learn from everyone around you and never be over confident.”

What is the record that changed your life?

“There is just too many.. Armand Van Helden – ‘You Don’t Know Me’ made me obsessed with EDM.”

What is your guilty pleasure record?

“George Benson – ‘Gimmie The Night’.

You have travelled the world twice over. What club and city really amazed you on your first trip there?

“It’s gotta be a festival in Brazil in Belo Horizonte, about 10,000 people and the sun was setting. Played after Ian Carey and when I opened with Meet Her at the Love Parade with my keytar and ran out the front, it was just amazing! People were going nuts!”

Who are the producers from around the world that you are giving high fives to at the moment?

Nari and Milani, Deorro (Ton!c), Basto, Daddy’s Groove and Zedd.”

You have an obvious love for soul and funk music. If we came back to yours after the club, what is the Mobin Master Back To Mine 10 you spin us to carry on the groove…

Commodores – Aint No Stoppin Us Now
Chic – Good Times
Lakeside – Fantastic Voyage
George Benson – Gimmie The Night
Brother Johnston – Stomp
Cheryl Lynn – Got To Be Real
Chic – Le Freak
MJ – Dont Stop Till You Get Enought
Kool & The Gang  – Open Sesame
James Brown – Hot Pants

The last two years has seen a huge rise in the amount of brilliant producers emerge from Australia. Why has it taken so long?

“The producers have always been here, like Tommy Trash, Dirty South, Nervo, Hook n Sling, Knife Party but we have only just been able to do true EDM and be recognized for it here. It’s because new generation are now mostly brought up on EDM now and demand it, unlike previous times.”

What is the number one music genre in Australia in 2012?

“I think EDM has taken over, used to be pop rock.”

What are your favourite 3 clubs in Oz right now?

Home Sydney, Family Brisbane and HQ Adelaide.”

Not many people know this, but Mobin Master is really good at…

“Reporting rectal MRI and other scans at the hospital for his day job…. not to mention draining puss now and then.”

And finally, it’s not good for my image, but I really love…

“Riding camels and soy ice cream.”
