Nari & Milani

The Italian legends ensuring the world is moving to their rhythm…boom!

Interview : Dan Prince

Guys welcome back to DMCWORLD and yet again you have the world talking about one of your records…Tiesto & Nari & Milani vs Delayers ‘Move To The Rhythm’. Please tell us a little history of the track and how it was developed…

Hi Dan! It was very easy, we proposed the track to Musical Freedom, they liked the tune, suggested the track to Tiesto and he wanted to participate immediately. We are very proud of this record.”

Can you remember the first time you played it out and the reaction?

“It was amazing. The first time was at Ultra Miami and everyone went crazy. And then we unveiled the surprise with Tiesto and Delayers.”

You came together in 1996 and started making music under the Dubwork banner. How has modern technology changed for you over the years…?

“The internet helps a lot with communication obviously. Today there are more resources and we are happy when for example we play at festivals and guys follow us by streaming. We love the contact with our fans…that is the most important thing for us.”

We cannot do an interview with Nari & Milani without mentioning Tomorrowland from last weekend. Talk us through your highlights of the event…

“Tomorrowland is the biggest relationship we have with the public. The energy the crowd releases when we perform is amazing. We could never give it up…Tomorrowland is like paradise. so many colours, smiles…we are honored to have transmitted a bit of Italy to the event. Thanks to Tomorrowland, you are an amazing stage!”

Be brave, what would you prefer…a main set at Tomorrowland or a main set at Ultra Miami?

“All you need is an UltraTomorrowland! Both! Of course!”

You are pushing the DJ Mag 100 poll again through your social media. Why is it important to you? For instance, do you think you are more likely to be offered better gigs the higher you rank?

“DJ Mag top 100 is always a goal It’s a survey done by the guys out there and is a good reference. Thank you to everyone who votes, we are always trying to improve…”

You have played at some fabulous gigs already this Summer; Ultra Croatia, Tel Aviv and Lonato looked very special…where are you looking forward to over the next few weeks…

“Yes we have been very lucky playing around the world. Watch out for us on August 10th at the Spanish Street Parade in Gallipoli and then our tour hitting America, Brazil and Indonesia…”

Tell us about your studio set up, who is better at what when you are making a track…

“We always consult with one another on new tools, new methods and tracks to play. Everything is prepared. Our inspirations are in the air and everything is connected to timing. Sometimes certain things work and sometimes they don’t. We just keep adding new variables into the equation until we get the finished product.”

What is coming out next from you guys…

“We have a new track called ‘Little More’ which we are playing during the Summer tour. We have a few other projects to arrange and then…go!”

When was the last time you played ‘Sunshine and Happiness’ at an event?

“Last week in the studio!! We haven’t played it for a few years in our DJ sets but we are very proud of that track because it is part of our history…”

You said in an interview earlier this year that “Italy as nation musically is very far behind”. Italy was once the leaders of dance music, why has it slipped so much?

“A lot of promoters are trying to make people understand EDM better with more events and gigs. Italy is all about style, there is little knowledge of EDM over here and we hope there is an electronic revolution soon. The music should win, but the business wins in Italy always…unfortunately.”

What is the most annoying part of touring?

“Flights, trains, cars…we would like to have wings!”

And finally, you tour all over the world – how do you combine a happy home life with your hectic schedule?

“It is all about organization. Where there’s a will there’s a way! We have a wonderful job giving happiness to people, it’s a miracle we have really.”
