New World Sound

Exclusive interview with the Gold Coast duo who return with one of the tunes of 2013 – ‘Flute’

Interview : Dan Prince

Jesse, Tyrone welcome to DMCWORLD, where in the world are you right now?

“Hey! We are in the studio on the Gold Coast, Australia…”

Well the big news right now is ‘Flute’ – which literally tore up ADE a couple of weeks back. Tell us the history of this track coming out on Sander van Doorn’s Doorn Records next week…

“Thanks for the kind words! The idea of a Flute came up as me and Ty were playing around in the studio before our set. The initial concept with the drop, melody and breakdown took us about 40mins, then we got Thomas involved and went back and forth with him until it was sounding tight. Doorn made perfect sense for Flute, great to see the reactions already!”

Who’s idea was all of the secrecy about the creators of this piece of magic?

“I don’t really think it was anyone’s idea ahahah, it just sort of happened after it was mistaken to be a W&W and Blasterjaxx collaboration because W&W played it at ADE.”

Loving your remix of Walden’s ‘First Day’ – tell us how your studio relationship works…who excels in what department?

“Cheers! We’ve got two similar studio setups so we can both work on different things at the same time. “

Do you ever argue about music?

“We used to a little bit but not really anymore.”

Two brothers living on the Gold Coast in Australia, how old were you when you discovered dance music and who were the artists and DJs you were getting into at an early age?

Jesse: “When we were younger, dance music wasn’t really big in Australia but we’ve always liked it since we were really young. I remember going to soccer practice when I was about 8 years old and watching the film clip to Darude – ‘Sandstorm’ and loving it ahahah…”

How did your family feel about you pursuing a career in music. Jesse you deferred a dual degree in Software Engineering. Commerce and Tyrone you ditched a Bachelor in Sustainable Development…?

Initially they didn’t really understand how it worked but they’ve become more and more supportive. At the moment we are trying to focus 100% on music so we thought deferring our uni degrees would be the best option.”

How important has Be Yourself Music’s Dick De Groot been on your development as musicians?

“Dick and Be Yourself Music have been a great help from the beginning! He signed our first record ‘Peak’ to Big & Dirty, which had support from lots of A list DJs including Tiesto, who played it twice on his Clublife Radio Show. We also signed a couple of records to Marco V’s imprint of Be Yourself (‘Bantam’ and ‘Cube’ with Ryan Kristo). Marco V has also been very helpful and those records were supported by everyone from David Guetta to Armin Van Buuren.”

Jesse you are classically trained as a pianist and on the trumpet. How did playing the trumpet go down with your mates at school and how important has the piano skills been with your producing…?

“Ahahah well this one time at band camp…Nah our mates have been really supportive – we all try to help each other in whatever we are doing. Piano/Theory has definitely been a big help in production as it means we can write the chord structures and melodies really quickly.”

Talk us through the moment watching Fedde Le Grand dropping one of your bombs at Tomorrowland this summer…

“It’s definitely one of the best feelings in the world seeing someone you have looked up to playing one of your tracks at such a big event!”

Let’s talk about your love of croquet and all things British. Who has the biggest mallet out of you two?

“Ahhahah! We’ve recently been dabbling in bobsledding and lawn bowls also!”

Who are some of the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to right now?

“There are too many to mention! Local guys like Will Sparks, Nick Galea, Samual James and internationally Thomas Newson, Osen and Henry Fong all have massive futures!”

What is the 1 record you wish you’d have made?

“There isn’t really one to be honest – the best feeling in the world is seeing an awesome reaction to a track you’ve made.”

It may not be good for our image, but New World Sound really love…

“What do you mean, its great for our image ahahah! We really LOVE doing things that are unexpected – seeing people’s reactions is priceless!”

And finally, what is coming out next from you guys…?

“We’ve got heaps tracks in the works so you’ll have to wait and see Dan…”
