Erick – champion of the Balearics talks to DMC about the white island and beyond…

EtickWelcome back to the DMC world Erick. Another incredible summer. I was just looking back at your schedule from a couple of weeks ago – another epic session at Pacha in Ibiza, straight to the airport for a gig in New York, up to The Hamptons then across to Las Vegas and finally back to the Balearics for a night at your residency with Basement Jaxx. All in one week. How on earth do you keep this energy up?
“Jesus, ha ha that was one trip. I still do it for the passion Dan, to be honest I kinda enjoy the long haul flights with my computer in front of me, I get so much done. It’s all second nature to me now. And at the end of the day, how can I complain? I remember back to the days when I was getting paid two hundred pounds or something and now I get paid so well for two hours work. I’m very happy.”

Your night at Pacha has been one of the biggest night’s at Ibiza’s number one venue for many years. How does it feel having ‘new kids on the block’s’ such as The Swedish House Mafia, Luciano and Monsieur Guetta swarming around you with their also, huge nights?

“Well, we’ve had another great season. It’s great for Pacha to have such a brilliant group of DJs playing every night. The Swedes have had an amazing season, Guetta as accomplished as ever with his poptastic sound, Luciano has stormed it with his soulful house. I just do my own groove, people come back because they trust me and my music. It also helps having some great staff around me, Helen is an absolute rock star!”

Tell us about your Wednesday night Pacha resident Chuckie…a lot of big noise about him this year…

“He reminds me of a young version of myself with his house sound, a really great DJ who has come through the huge Dutch invasion.”

You started DJing pretty young…
“Yeah, I started collecting records when I was six years old and then when I was ten I got a pair of Technics 1200 from a neighbour.”

What did your mom think of your career choice?

“She loved it.”

Not many people know this but Erick Morillo is very good at…

“Dancing. No, cooking eggs!”

What have been the best festivals of the summer for you?

“Extrema in Belgium in August was rocking, and Ultra in Miami was, as always, superb. A big mention also to the beach event in Porto Azura in Portugal, 40,000 people going crazy breaking all kinda records.”

Who has stood out guest wise at Subliminal this Summer?
“Danny Tenaglia was absolutely awesome. I have looked up to him for so many years and he has been the only DJ that I have ever let close the night at Pacha.”

Who is the coolest person on your mobile phone?

“My mom.”

Danny Whittle at Pacha in Ibiza cannot keep raving about Pacha New York…how’s it doing out there – why is it so good?
“The venue has been created by DJs for the DJ. You can’t fault it from the sound system to the lights to the dancers. It’s New York’s biggest club.”

You have a huge discography – what in your opinion is your best production?

“It has to be the Reel To Reel stuff back in 1992. It opened up so many doors for me.”

And finally, what’s next from the Subliminal studio…

“I can’t say too much yet, but watch out for my third studio album later this year with some great collaborations.”
