The new force of techno talks Space Ibiza, Skunk Anansie, b2b with Carl Cox and yoga

Interview by Dan Prince

Hey Nicole welcome back to DMCWORLD…where in the world are you today?

Hey Dan, at home, just finished a show at Brixton Academy, we did the after hours party for SW4 festival in London packed up at 7.30am it was blinding.”

Cool. Well another busy summer for you with new music, guest spots at all of the best parties and your MOOD Radio show going from strength to strength. Let’s kick off with your remixof Carl Cox’s ‘Kommen Zusammen’..please talk us through your approach and thoughts behind your excellent rework…

“Thank you, every time I play this remix the whole place gets into a trance. It’s hypnotic deep and meaningful.  I’m very much into the raw sound of techno, a bit minimal, deep and tough at the same time, works well at big festivals as well as dark boxes when pitched down. This is my second remix for Carl’s work apart from the collaboration we did on See You Next Tuesday. He always pushes me to reach new boundaries, the remix is doing very well currently in the techno chart, I’m very pleased with the results.”

Check out Nicole dropping her remix at Mayday…

Next week sees you back in Ibiza for another appearance with Carl at his Revoltion weekly at Space…why is this such a special club for you?

“It all began for me at Space Ibiza, it feels like home when I play there. The whole Safehouse management team is impeccable and very hospitable, all the artists and guests Carl has are treated royally, the family vibe and the incredible array of DJs and producers from all around are top notch. I just did a 3 hour set there and went B2B with Carl for an hour. The chemistry that night was second to none, I felt at one with the crowd and having Carl by my side, the guy who kicked off everything for me was quite intense. Still buzzing from it.”

A couple of weeks ago some superstar DJs including Paul Oakenfold, Afrojack and Steve Angello announced that “Ibiza is too expensive”,and that the “mystique of Ibiza isn’t there anymore”. Do you agree with those comments?

“I do in a way – it’s definitely changed a lot, it’s become much more infrastructured and shifting more to the commercial crowd. Everyone wants to be in Ibiza, because they’ve heard so much about it, and the reason they did is because Ibiza is special, the rich and the poor mixed together without worrying about putting on a mask. It was very classless in that sense, now it’s about VIP tables and cashing in on the wannabes. It’s great for businesses obviously, but it’s not for the island’s character and ethos, I hope we don’t lose it and become like Vegas or Saint Tropez.”

Whilst everyone’s eyes are always looking at Ibiza and Croatia in the summer, there are some wonderful beach clubs taking place all over Europe. Tell us about your recent 6 hour set at The Cacoa Beach Club in Bulgaria…

“8 years ago I worked with the promoter who run this festival called Solar, they also run a winter club in Sofia called Yalta –  when I did Victor Calderon’s bookings in Europe, I’ve known the promoters by email and having to come and play for them is quite amazing actually as I see a different circle being formed throughout this journey. It was my third visit to Bulgaria, the connection I have with them is incredible really, the beach party was pure magic, the location transports you to a different world when the sun rises at 7am, it was pure and unforgettable.”

Another place that is always incredible to play is Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos where you rocked a couple of weeks ago. This place must be the ultimate club for a DH to spin as the sun rises…?

“Equally the same sunrise feeling at Cavo Paradiso, I was quite surprised how charming Mykonos is, it was my first time obviously. It’s a very international crowd and very clued up musically.”

What are the big 5 records in your box right now?

Maceo Plex – Conjure Superstar

Francisco Allendes _ Human Design

Wade – Check Point

You recently asked your Facebook friends…”If you could have me for one day, what would you do with me…use your imagination.” What was the best suggestion?

” – ‘Teach you yoga so you can stop smoking’.  I was quite touched…”

And finally, what is coming out next from you studio wise?

“Putting my finishing touches on my collaboration with Skin from Skunk Anansie, we have already finished 5 singles, and it’s sounding awesome. Her voice reaches me deeply. I have a remix coming out on Jamie Jones’ label in October and I’m almost done with a collab project with another legend, Green Velvet. Exciting times ahead.”
